Some You Win…

Riva Resort,
Barbados

With the warm sun high in the sky, native wild birds singing, and the soft, soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore, April gazed out at her paradise. Taking a deep breath, April’s lungs swelled with the many smells of the ocean. With the warm, golden sand between her toes, April realised she had never had an experience like this.

“Honey?” Ronan called as he walked along the golden beach towards his wife.

April turned. Smiling at Ronan she wrapped her arms around his neck and passionately kissed him.

“Mmm, what was that for?”

“For being so gorgeous,” April replied with a cheeky smile on her face as she turned back to face the ocean.

Wrapping his arms around April’s waist, Ronan gently rested his head on her shoulder. The sweet smell of her hair was almost intoxicating. Looking out across the tropical ocean Ronan smiled.

“I love you April.”

“And I love you,” April replied as she placed her hands on Ronan’s.

As the two stood looking out at the ocean in silence, the faint sound of waves crashing filled the air.

Taxi Bay,
Somerset Airport

Waiting outside the lively airport, Charlotte looked at her watch. 2.36. Quickly running her eye over her luggage, Charlotte stepped forward and arching her neck, strained to see if any taxis were coming. Noticing none, Charlotte stepped back. As people quickly buzzed past her, Charlotte was becoming agitated. The constant bumping and knocking of other’s was become more than annoying. Running her right hand through her auburn mane of hair, Charlotte took a deep, relaxing breath.

Charlotte’s face lit up as a taxi pulled into the taxi bay in front of her. Oh thank God, Charlotte thought to herself. Raising her hand at the taxi, Charlotte picked up some of the smaller luggage and walked over to the taxi.

“Good afternoon,” the cheerful taxi driver said as he got out of his taxi and headed towards Charlotte’s luggage.

Charlotte gave the driver a quick smile. Placing her luggage down near the trunk, Charlotte stepped into the taxi. Shutting the passenger door, Charlotte picked up her purse and slid a picture out of a small compartment. Looking at it, Charlotte smiled.

“Soon my love, soon we will be reunited.”

Hearing the trunk slam shut behind her, Charlotte was startled. Dropping her handbag, all the contents came spilling out and rolled over the floor of the taxi. Noticing the taxi driver coming towards her, Charlotte began to quickly pick up the contents of her purse. Scrambling to collect all the contents, the driver’s door to the taxi swung open.

“Lost something ma’am?” the taxi driver asked as he entered the taxi.

“Ah…no, no. I was just…picking up my purse, I dropped it.”

“Ah, I understand. I drop my wallet all the time.”

“Right,” Charlotte replies becoming annoyed at the driver’s constant talking.

“So where to?” the taxi driver asked as the taxi began to pull out from the bay.

“Ah, the Somerset Springs Apartments thank you.”

As the taxi begins to speed out of the parking lot, Charlotte looked out of the window, not noticing her gun had slipped from her purse and was resting under the seat in front of her.

Louise Hilton’s Residence,
25 Spencer Street

“Mum I saw you,” Shaznay yelled as she followed her mother into the kitchen.

“I don’t know what you think you saw,” Louise begins as she opens up the refrigerator. “But there was nothing going on between Stuart Goodwin and myself.”

“I…I can’t believe you’re standing her lying to my face. I saw you two with my own eyes. You kissed.”

Louise slams the refrigerator closed. Glaring at her daughter, Louise begins to breath deeper. “For the last time, there is nothing going on between Stuart Goodwin and me.”

“Fine, then you won’t mind if I tell Kate.”

Watching her daughter walk into the living room, Louise’s heart skips a beat. “You wouldn’t dare.”

Shaznay stops in her tracks. “Why not mother? You tell me what was really happening and I’ll let it go, but if you lie – I’m going straight to Kate.”

Louise sighs as she walks over to the lounge suite. Taking a seat on the soft sofa, Louise looks at Shaznay. “I’ve already told you, nothing happened. It was just a kiss.”

“A kiss?”

“Yes a kiss. One kiss. One small peck, that’s all it was.”

Shaznay looks at her mother. “Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why would you do that to Kate? You are her best friend…”

“And Stuart was my…” Louise suddenly stops, realising what she was saying.

Shaznay walks over and takes a seat opposite her mother.

“What about Stuart mother? Stuart Goodwin was your what?”

Louise looks away from her daughter.

Suburban Taxi,
Somewhere in Somerset

“So, where are you from?” the foreign taxi driver asks as he looks in his mirror at Charlotte.

“Piccadilly,” Charlotte replies with a tone of annoyance.

“Oh…Piccadilly. Say, you would’ve been there when there was that murder, huh?”

Charlotte’s face is suddenly flushed of its entire colour. As the palms of her hands became clammy, she looked at the taxi driver’s eyes in the rear view mirror. “Murder?”

“Yeah, the mayor’s murder,” the driver replies as the taxi turns a corner. “He and his wife were found dead yesterday. They thing it was his mistress.”

Charlotte doesn’t reply. Sitting in silence, Charlotte switches her attention to what’s outside.

“Apparently, the mistress broke in on Tuesday night and shot the mayor and his wife before vanishing into the night. Did you know the mayor?”

“Ah…no. I can’t say I did.”

A shimmer of silver catches Charlotte’s eye. Looking down at the floor, Charlotte spots her gun. Sliding her foot towards the gun, Charlotte doesn’t notice the driver has begun talking again.

“The servants even gave a description of her. Apparently she has reddish hair just longer than her shoulders, a fair complexion and…”

He suddenly stops when he notices Charlotte fits the description. As Charlotte slides the gun towards herself, she looks at the driver. “Could you just pull in here?”

“But lady, that’s a swamp,” the driver replies, looking out his window at Somerset Springs Conservation Park.

“Yeah, I need a smoke.”

The driver pulls into the Somerset Springs Conservation Park and stops the taxi. Charlotte quickly picks up the gun and slides it into her purse. Opening her taxi door, she exits the taxi and pulls a cigarette out of her purse. Walking around to the driver’s window, she smiles at him. “Have a light?”

The driver nods. Turning away from Charlotte, ho opens the glove box. Pulling the gun from her purse, Charlotte takes aim at the driver and fires. The sudden bang echoes around the silent swamp. Native birds suddenly fly from the trees. The gunshot is instantly followed with the windscreen of the taxi being splattered with blood inside.

“We all have our secrets,” Charlotte says to herself as she opens the driver’s door and takes the keys from the ignition. Walking around to the trunk, Charlotte opens it and removes all of her luggage. Spotting a reel of tubing in the trunk, Charlotte takes it and slams the trunk shut.

The Goodwin Residence,
23 Spencer Street

Lying side-by-side in bed after having just made passionate love, Kate looks over at her husband. Stuart is peacefully sleeping. Gazing blankly at Stuart, Kate smiles. She has never felt this happy before. Finally, things are going her way for a change and her marriage is back on track. Rolling onto her side, Kate softly kisses Stuart’s unshaven cheek. Stuart stirs before stopping. Kate then gently and tenderly kisses Stuart on his lips. Stuart kisses back and the soft kiss quickly becomes a passionate one.

“Louise,” Stuart mumbles.

Kate suddenly stops. Looking at Stuart her heart sinks.

“Louise, don’t stop.”

Horrified at what Stuart just muttered, Kate quickly grabs her dressing gown and gets out of bed. Stuart wakes.

“Honey what are you doing?”

“You bastard,” Kate hisses as she storms out of the bedroom.

Stuart, still puzzled at what he’s done, gets out of bed and grabs his boxer shorts. Chasing after Kate, he grabs her arm.

“Kate, Kate what is it? What’s wrong?”

“You said you loved me Stuart. You said that there was nothing between Louise Hilton and you. You lied to me Stuart.”

Kate pulls away from Stuart’s strong grip and storms downstairs.

“Kate,” Stuart yells.

Rushing into the kitchen, Kate turns the kettle on.

“Kate wait a second, what the hell are you talking about?”

“You said Louise, Stuart. You uttered her name,” Kate yells as she looks at her husband.

“What?”

Kate scoffs. “You bastard, you said nothing happened.”

“Don’t you dare call me a bastard,” Stuart yells at Kate.

“Or what – huh? You’re going to hit me? Come on Stuart, take your best shot, you bastard.”

An enraged Stuart raises his hand and slaps Kate across her face. Falling to the floor, Kate begins to cry.

Stuart looks at Kate, lying on the floor crying. “Oh baby, honey,” he says as he bobs down to help her. “I am so sorry. I…I didn’t mean too.”

“Leave Stuart,” Kate mumbles.

“What? I didn’t hear you.”

“I said leave Stuart. Get out of this house and don’t ever comeback.”

Stuart looks at Kate. Glaring at her husband, Kate wipes away her tears. Stuart slowly rises and heads upstairs to pack. Once Stuart’s out of sight, tears begin to flow freely down Kate’s porcelain cheeks.

Somerset Springs Conservation Park,
Swamp Lands

The eerie calm of the swamp begins to make Charlotte nervous. Looking at the bloodied interior of the taxi, Charlotte stares at the dead taxi driver. Looking over at the fuel tank, Charlotte checks to see if the petrol is being siphoned correctly. Noticing the floor of the taxi is now soaked with fuel, she walks over and pulls the tubing out of the petrol tank. Throwing the tubing into the taxi, Charlotte leans over the dead taxi driver and opens the glove box. Taking his lighter, she slams the door shut. Walking over to a nearby tree, she collects some fallen leaves. The dry leaves are brittle. Carrying them over to the taxi, Charlotte begins to pile them under the rear tire, next to the fuel tank. Taking the lighter, she lights a leaf and places it on top of the others. Watching the other leaves begin to burn, Charlotte stands up and places the lighter into her pocket. Walking away from the taxi, Charlotte picks up her luggage and heads out of the park.

As the fire begins to lick at the tires, it soon begins to dance up along the burning rubber. Suddenly the bloodied taxi explodes in a massive fireball as native birds flee the nearby trees, screeching and squawking. Charlotte stops in her tracks when she hears the large explosion. As a smile creeps along her face, she resumes walking.

“Hey,” Cain says as Miranda and one of her friends enter the popular café.

“Hi,” Miranda replies with a smile.

“So…can I get you anything?”

“Um…just a chocolate milkshake thanks.”

“Right,” Cain replies with a smile.

Miranda and her friend take a seat. The music from the jukebox fills the café.

As he begins to walk away, Cain stops and looks back at Miranda. “I was just wondering, do you want to go out sometime? Maybe catch a movie?”

Miranda looks at Cain. His smouldering good looks and great personality had had her transfixed for years. “Sure.”

“Great, I’ll call you tonight and we can arrange something?”

Miranda smiles. “Sure.”

“It’s time,” she says to herself as she slowly rises from the bed. Walking over to the bathroom, April takes some deep breaths. Looking at the bathroom basin, April stares at her pregnancy test. Slowly she makes her way across the cold and shiny tiles to the basin. Picking up the pregnancy test, she looks at it. Standing in silence, April slowly raises her head and looks at her reflection in the mirror in front of her.

“I’m pregnant,” April says with a radiant smile.

”Heaven, I’m in heaven.”

The sweet tune of a female’s voice danced up in the air and soon filled the steamy bathroom. The sound of the singing echoed.

Enjoying a warm and relaxing shower, Georgia let the warm, comforting water trickle and splash its way down her body. Stepping backwards, Georgia let the warm water run over her short, brown hair. The warm embrace of the water was angelic. Picking up a cake of soap, Georgia began to run the fragranced soap across her wet, naked body. Slowly moving the soap across her stomach, the suds of the soap swelled around her belly button and trickled down her legs. Moving the soap up her body, Georgia began to run the soap up her side. Rolling it along the outer side of her left breast, Georgia suddenly stopped. Dropping the soap, Georgia began feeling around an area near her left armpit. Georgia’s heart skipped a beat as she felt a small lump. Quickly checking the other side, Georgia noticed there was no lump on that side. Becoming frantic, Georgia began to breathe deeply as she felt the lump again. Turning the shower off, Georgia stepped out and grabbed a towel. With her hand pressed firmly against the lump, a tear trickled down Georgia’s cheek.
