Naraku's Origins:
The half-demon Naraku had very modest beginnings- he was origionally a thief who went by the name of Onigumo. Onigumo's original body is never seen (at least, not yet) because he is introduced to the readers as severely burnt- his entire body is covered in bandages, and he cannot move, save sipping gruel. Nothing is know of his life before this accident, but one can surmise that it had been brutal, merciless and full of poverty. Kikyo, Inu-Yasha's love interest and guardian preistess of the Shikon Jewel(which grants limitless power to it's wielder), tended to his wounds and Onigumo developed feelings for her. No doubt it was probobly the first time anyone had been kind to him. His desire for Kikyo, combined with the anger, hatred and despair he felt at being trapped in a useless body began to attract demons, while Kikyo's love for Inu-yasha weakened the protective sheild she had formed over Onigumo. Eventually, the shield collapsed, and Onigumo sacrificed his soul for a proper body, a demonic body.

Undoubtedly, Onigumo knew of the love Kikyo and Inu-Yasha shared. More maddening than being in constant physical torment was the fact that his "love" was not being returned by Kikyo. The moment Onigumo gained his new body, he became Naraku. Naraku, while still being half-human, and possessing Onigumo's memories, was not the same person as the human thief. He was colder, fiercer, more intelligent. He was the crystallized rage of Onigumo. He posed as Inu-Yasha and attacked Kikyo, then attacked Inu-Yasha using Kikyo's body, hoping that it would destroy their love forever, as well as corrupting the Shikon Jewel. His plan led to the death of Kikyo and the fifty-year imprisonment of Inu-Yasha. The Jewel, however, slipped from his grasps when Kikyo refused to curse Inu-Yasha and went quietly to the land of the dead.

Naraku wants only to become a full demon. Living in a brutal, vicious world has taught him that power is the key to survival, and he will stop at nothing to gain the Jewel. Naraku wants to be rid of the pain and longing he felt as Onigumo, as well as the weakness his human side sires. Naraku veiws Inu-Yasha and his group of Jewel Hunters as a direct threat on his life, and is constantly searching for a new way to be rid of them.

Naraku's character is constantly displayed as cold and completely guilt-free. However it is the webmistresses opinion that there is more to the enigmatic demon than Rumiko Takahashi (the author of Inu-Yasha) wishes to convey.
Naraku, like a true evil mastermind, relies primarily on his underlings to do the dirty work. Still, the fact that he can manipulate so many people/create so many "children" is a power in itself. Naraku could talk himself out of Death.
