Episode Seven: Soulful

PREVIOUSLY

- The Sound byte “We shall return your soul (from “Grave”) plays over the DEMON giving DRUSILLA her soul.

- DRUSILLA “Not just him, kill what made him like he is, kill them all, the council, the slayer, all of them!”

- DRUSILLA “Pathetic creature, why do you assume soul equals good, all of the worst human beings alive had souls. I will never join you”

SPIKE “I’m not giving up on you”

- DRUSILLA “That” DRUSILLA punches at ANGELUS, her fist passes through him.

ANGELUS “It’s a side effect, from Wolfram & Hart taking away my soul.”

- FRED puts her hand on OZ’s. “Maybe it’s just that you haven’t got anybody else.”

OZ “Maybe, but did you know, that the month or so I’ve spent here is the longest I’ve stayed in a single place since I left Sunnydale, how am I going to find somebody”

FRED “It’s not that hard” she stands and offers her hand to OZ “Let’s go get some dinner”

- We now see that WILLOW’s hair is black, her face is in pain “It’s here!”

SPIKE “What is?”

WILLOW “The first, it’s what’s controlling DRUSILLA”

- WILLOW “LEAVE”

ANGELUS “You know you can’t kill me” ANGELUS shatters into pieces and the demon/devil spectre thing rises from where he was standing into the sky.

- WILLOW “It’s temporarily defeated, but it’ll be back.”

SPIKE “And it’ll be after DRUSILLA”

“LONDON 1865” appears on the screen

We see a room, in it are a young boy, WILLIAM, and his father THOMAS, they are both sitting at a desk and writing. A MOTHER comes into the room.

MOTHER “Come along WILLIAM, time for bed, for you have lessons on the morrow”

WILLIAM whines “MOTHER”

THOMAS “Listen to your MOTHER, WILLIAM”

WILLIAM puts his pen down and stands.

THOMAS “One day you’ll understand that your MOTHER does only what’s good for you. And one day you’ll find a woman of your own who is kind and.. effulgent”

WILLIAM “Effulgent?”

MOTHER “Gleaming son, it’s a perfectly perfect word, now hurry on”

WILLIAM kisses both parents and runs out of the room.

THOMAS picks up a coat from the back of a chair.

MOTHER “Where are you going?”

THOMAS “To the tavern, I won’t be late”

MOTHER “Ok, make sure you aren’t”

THOMAS walks out of another door to the one WILLIAM went through and the MOTHER sits down.

END SCENE

“PRESENT DAY” appears on screen

DRUSILLA is in a cage in a dark basement, there’s a small dirty window through which a little light shines. Suddenly we hear a click and the whole room lights up, DRUSILLA sits up suddenly, the sound of footsteps walking downstairs is heard, LORNE comes into view with a tray with some bread and a glass of blood.

LORNE “Good morning DRUSILLA” he takes the bread and blood of the tray and puts them through the bars.

DRUSILLA stands up, LORNE steps back.

DRUSILLA smiles “You don’t need to worry, I can’t get through the bars” to prove her point she attempts to put her hand through the bars, but there’s an invisible barrier that doesn’t let her through”

LORNE “Your history, not exactly ready to feel safe around you”

DRUSILLA picks up the glass of blood, as she raises it to her mouth, she morphs into vamp face “makes sense” and drinks some.

LORNE “You seem a lot more together today”

DRUSILLA “Well, I haven’t seen anybody in about three weeks, not since you and the witch put me down here”

LORNE “We thought you still might be under the influence of the First”

DRUSILLA “I don’t think I am, I just know that after 10 days of straight crying and screaming, you run out of tears, you lose your voice, and you have to start dealing.”

LORNE smiles “he was right”

DRUSILLA “Who?”

LORNE “SPIKE”

Hearing SPIKE’s name DRUSILLA twitches.

DRUSILLA puts her glass down “All gone, you can take the bread, I’m not hungry”

LORNE walks to the cage and bends down, as soon as he puts his hand through to pick up the glass DRUSILLA grabs his hand and pulls him in right up to his shoulder.

OZ and FRED are sitting at a table eating breakfast.

FRED “LORNE’s been a while, maybe we shouldn’t have sent him down on his own”

OZ “He seemed to want to do it, maybe SPIKE thought a demon would have better luck getting any sense out of her than either of us.”

FRED “Or maybe” she stands “he thought the two of us wanted to be alone”, she kisses OZ and then walks over to a sink putting her breakfast stuff in it. “We should have figured out a way to get SPIKE down there”

OZ “Don’t know how we forgot the fact that a giraffe might have some trouble getting in a basement.”

FRED “He doesn’t seem to bothered by it though, maybe he thinks he’ll be able to let her out soon”

OZ “Why, because she spent 3 weeks alone, with no contact at all, starving in a basement.”

FRED “He thought it was what was best, and he’s got the most experience in this field”

OZ “True”

FRED “There he is”

OZ “Who?”

FRED “SPIKE, he’s outside” she grabs OZ’s hand and the two walk towards the door.

OZ opens the door “After you”

FRED starts to say “Thank You” but is interrupted by LORNE’s scream coming from the basement.

END SCENE

Immediately cuts to DRUSILLA with LORNE pulled right up against the bars of her cage.

DRUSILLA madly shouting “Let me out, I need to kill him”

OZ offscreen “You’re not going to be killing anyone”

The camera swings round to show OZ, holding a rather large tranq. gun. He shoots; image goes into slow motion as the dart flies towards DRUSILLA, as it gets closer she yanks up LORNE’s arm causing the dart to hit him.

OZ “Crap!” He starts to reload

DRUSILLA “Let me out or I’ll rip your friend’s arm off”

FRED “OZ, what are you doing”, she rushes past him down the stairs, goes right up to the cage, yanking a piece of chord hanging from the ceiling, as she does shutters open at the back of DRUSILLA’s cage, causing sunlight to flood in.

DRUSILLA screams, lets go of LORNE and crawls quickly over to a small patch of shade, as she reaches the shade OZ comes up to the cage, pulls LORNE’s arm out of the cage and shoots DRUSILLA with the tranc. gun. FRED pulls the chord again and the shutters close, as DRUSILLA falls to the ground unconscious.

FRED “How did you forget the windows, and was there really any need to shoot her”

OZ “I was panicked, I forgot, and in my opinion there’s a need to stake her.”

FRED “I just don’t think SPIKE’ll be too pleased, but it’s definitely looking like she doesn’t want our help.”

END ACT

ACT TWO

Act opens in a hospital ward, GUNN is lying in the bed unconscious, the heart monitor on the table behind next to his bed is beeping at regular intervals, suddenly it starts beeping faster, GUNN lurches up in bed coughing, gasping for breath, he then slumps back down and turns his head to see ANGELUS sitting in the chair next to his bed.

ANGELUS “There, that woke you up”

GUNN “I was…..DRUSILLA, she escaped”

ANGELUS “All part of the plan bro. Speaking of which, you’ve got to get out of this bed and off to work.”

GUNN he sits up “How long was I?”

ANGELUS “About  a month”

GUNN “A month!?”

ANGELUS “It’s funny, it’s really puzzling the doctors, you should have woken up, well about four weeks ago, but, why have a piece in play that you don’t need yet.”

GUNN “I’m not a ‘piece’”

ANGULUS “Of course you are, if you weren’t, why you’d be able to pick up the phone and tell your old buddies FRED and LORNE what you’re up to these days”

GUNN “I’m not phoning them because they’re the enemy, you and the partners are the real answer”

ANGELUS smiles “I’m glad you still believe that. And now, you’ve got to get out of bed, you’ve got a shiny new office building that needs you to run it.”

GUNN “Shiny…New?”

ANGELUS “Yeah, someplace where a talking giraffe won’t be able to get to. In a city, out of that village we had you in.”

GUNN “Sounds nice”

ANGELUS “It is, I’ll send a driver for you, don’t worry about his lack of eyes, he can see just fine”

GUNN looks a little worried by that comment, and ANGELUS disappears into thin air.

END SCENE

We are now in another room at the ranch, the whole gang, including SPIKE, are in the room. LORNE is lying unconscious on a couch. FRED is waving salts of some kind under his nose. Suddenly LORNE coughs and opens his eyes.

LORNE “I’ll make you a deal, you get that stink out of my face and I’ll wake up.”

FRED stops “sorry, we had to try something”

LORNE “What happened, what did DRUSILLA do to me.”

FRED “It wasn’t DRUSILLA, it was OZ, he shot you”

LORNE to OZ “You did?”

OZ “I didn’t mean to, I was aiming for DRUSILLA, you got in the way”

SPIKE “What happened?”

LORNE “I don’t know, she seemed fine, perfectly sane”

SPIKE “You should have known something was wrong.”

LORNE “I’m pretty sure nothing was”

FRED “What, she tried to rip your arm off”

LORNE “Yes, but I think there's something else”

FRED “What do you mean?”

LORNE “Well she was fine, going on about how 2 weeks of crying had tired her out and how she realised the only way forward was to start to deal with her soul, just like you thought’d happen.”

SPIKE “But it was obviously an act”

LORNE “I don’t think so. Like I said, she was normal, then, then” he looks at SPIKE

SPIKE “Then what?”

LORNE “Then I mentioned you, that was it, she asked who thought a month in a basement would help her, and then. It was like it was someone else, her voice was different, lower, she asked me to take the glass and bread and she pulled me in.”

SPIKE “The trigger”

OZ “Like what Willow mentioned. The First must be using you to control her.”

FRED “How does that even work.”

SPIKE “I’ll try and explain, same thing happened to me. You see the DRUSILLA that I knew, is gone, she has a soul, therefore the want to do good. Now a soul is a hell of a lot to deal with, I asked for mine and it was hard, DRUSILLA had it forced on her, suddenly she’s feeling remorse for the hundreds of years of death she’s been a part of. Now what the First has done, is found something that was so important to her before she got her soul, that as long as it keeps that idea in her head, it’s as if the soul is gone, and the First can control her.”

FRED “And you were pretty important to DRUSILLA”

SPIKE “I’d guess she sees me as a sort of mark against her otherwise pure record of evil.”

OZ “We’re in a jam then”

SPIKE “Yes we are, while I had a reason to want to do good, people I cared about, DRUSILLA has none of that, no way to even try and fight the First. It’s going to make helping her extremely difficult.”

FRED “Too difficult?”

SPIKE “Maybe”

END ACT

ACT THREE

We see a large building in the midst of other large buildings, a sign on it reads “Wolfram & Hart”

Scene cuts to inside the building, GUNN is in a large office with a large desk and a large window.

ANGELUS is standing behind GUNN

ANGELUS “You like?”

GUNN “It’s good, the glass…” he turns and looks at the window, “It’s necro-tinted, we planning on having vamps in here”

ANGELUS “Of course we are, DRUSILLA is still a very important part of my plan, she’s the one that’s going kill SPIKE.”

GUNN “And the soul she’s been lumbered with”

ANGELUS “That wasn’t part of my plan, but I can make it work for me, vampires with souls are always such fun”

GUNN “Until they bust up your plans and wipe out your entire army in seconds”

ANGELUS “Yes but DRUSILLA is alone in the world, the one person who might want to help her is the one that drives her insane, the one that lets me control her, despite the soul.”

GUNN “And where is she now”

ANGELUS “You wouldn’t believe that sometimes life can throw you a lucky break.”

GUNN “She’s with him”

ANGELUS “Exactly, and now its just a case of bringing someone in who can break her out, and I have just the vampire for the job.”

END SCENE

FRED and OZ are walking hand-in-hand through a city.

OZ “You really think this was a good idea”

FRED “What?”

OZ “Leaving LORNE alone at the ranch”

FRED “He’ll be fine, there’s no way for DRUSILLA to get out, and SPIKE doesn’t want anyone going down to see her until we here back from Willow.”

OZ “It does not look good for DRUSILLA”

FRED “It really doesn’t, it’s a shame, SPIKE wanted to help her.”

OZ “That’s what drives me insane, I work with a guy who a few years ago was slayer-enemy number one, Buffy wanted him dead, yet now he’s a good guy.”

FRED “Then why did you agree to stay”

OZ “Because of what you told me, he is a good guy, by helping him, we’re doing good, I’ve seen it. Yet, here’s DRUSILLA, an evil insane vampire, yet just because she has a soul, we’re keeping her around, despite the fact that it’s probably endangering our lives doing so, despite the fact that the ultimate evil has control over her.”

FRED “She deserves at least a chance, she was an innocent once, like you were. And if Willow’s news isn’t good I think SPIKE might decide the best thing is to stake her.”

The two walk on for a moment.

OZ “You know there was another reason I stayed”

FRED “What?”

OZ turns to FRED “I’m looking at her”
FRED smiles, then suddenly her smile disappears.

OZ “What?”

FRED points past OZ into a crowd, in the crowd, is GUNN.

FRED “It’s GUNN”

OZ “He’s out of the hospital”

FRED “Looks like, we should tell SPIKE and LORNE”

The two turn round and walk back the direction they came from.

END ACT

ACT FOUR

We see an exterior shot of the ranch at evening time, the scene cuts inside to LORNE reading a newspaper.

LORNE turns and sees somebody, we don’t “Hey, you shouldn’t be able to…”

He is cut off as he is punched in the face, knocking him unconscious.

END SCENE

DRUSILLA is asleep in her cage

ANGELUS suddenly appears next to her “Oh DRUSILLA”

DRUSILLA opens her eyes, sees that there is someone else in the cage and leaps up.

DRUSILLA looks around “Who put me here, where am I.”

ANGELUS “You’re in a cage, SPIKE put you here, I’m here to help you.”

DRUSILLA “Daddy, I knew you’d come, but how can you help me, you’re not solid.”

ANGELUS “Maybe not, but I brought someone who is.”

END SCENE

“1865” appears on screen, we see a street at night, THOMAS is walking through it.

We here a woman’s voice from off screen “Help, somebody!”

THOMAS hears this and heads toward the sound, as he walks toward an alley, a man running from it knocks him.

THOMAS walks into the alley, we see DARLA sitting on the ground.

THOMAS “Are you ok.”

DARLA “He knocked me over”

THOMAS “I’ll help you up” he crouches down and takes her hand “What happened?”

DARLA “A man, he stole my bag”

THOMAS “I think I saw him, do you want me to go and get it”

DARLA “Don’t, it’s not worth your life, it had nothing in it that I wanted” she morphs into vamp face “But you might” she bites into THOMAS’ neck.

END SCENE

We see DRUSILLA and ANGELUS in the cage, footsteps come towards it, and the door is ripped off its hinges.

ANGELUS “Excellent” he turns to DRUSILLA “DRUSILLA, I’d like you to meet the person who’s going to help you.”

As the camera reveals that the person who ripped off the door to the cage is THOMAS, we here ANGELUS say “This, is SPIKE’s father”
