Fred

Fred started life as Winifred Burkle, an ordingary girl living in Texas with her mother and father. She came to Los Angeles to study Physics, at which she was a natural. Her professor, Professor Sidel, saw her talent and also saw that eventually she would surpass him. Not wanting this to happen Professor Sidel cast Fred into the dimension of Pylea, a world where demons are the dominant species and humans are called cows and are owned by demons as slaves. The religious group that ran the world ensured that all humans wore collars that would enbable them to kill them if they stepped out of line.
After she was able to disable her collar Fred lived in hiding in a cave for years until she was captured after coming into town to talk to Cordelia Chase, who had been sent to Pylea from Los Angeles. She was due to be executed, the honor was to go to Angel who was known as a mighty drachen killer, refusing to kill her the two escaped.
After taking part in a successful mission to oust the religious group from power Fred joined the staff of Angel Investigations back to Los Angeles, where she joined the group.
Fred found adapting to life in LA difficult but eventually did and began to date Gunn, the two broke up when Gunn killed Professor Sidel as he didnt want Fred to be a murderer and do it herself.
Fred was made head of the science division at Wolfram & Hart with millions of dollars of resources at her disposal, she was able to use these when Spike came to her to ask for her help in getting him back from his ghostly form. Eventually she devised a method and Spike was made corporeal, though still a vampire.
Over the months that followed Spike and Fred became close friends which was why after killing a senior partner and being turned into a giraffe, she volunteered to come with him to Africa and do whatever she could to help.
