Spike

Spike, is a 125 year old giraffe, but has not always been that way, Spike was born as a human called William in England. William grew up to become a poet, though not a very good one, he was madly in love with a woman he could not possibly attain, Cecily, who some believe became the now deceased vengeance demon Halfrek. After being turned down by Cecily, William ran out into the streets, and in desperate need for comfort, found himself at the mercy of Drusilla, a vampire, who turned him into a creature of the night.
Over 100 years passed and having killed 2 slayers already Spike came to Sunnydale, Calafornia to meet and kill the new slayer Buffy Summers. But when Drusilla's sire Angelus lost his soul his plans became to grand for even Spike, who was forced to enter a truce with Buffy in order to save the world, and get Drusilla back.
Spike returned to Sunnydale for 2 brief visits until on the 3rd he was captured by a military organisation and implanted with a chip that would stop him from harming humans in any way. Desperate for food and shelter, Spike persuaded Buffy to take him in, in exchange for information about the military.
Even after the military were defeated, Buffy did not kill Spike, as he had helped her and posed no threat. Spike, however still harbored a desire to kill Buffy and after surgery to remove the chip set out to do so. The surgery however had not worked, Spike was still unable to harm humans, it was shortly after this that Spike realised the reason he was so obsessed with Buffy, was because he was in love with her.
Finding out about Spike's feelings, Buffy was disgusted, and had his invite to her house revoked. It was only during the final battle against the hell god Glory that she allowed him back in, seeing that he was changing, and that he could do good. During the following battle Buffy died.
During Buffy's summer of death Spike babysat for Dawn after promising to protect her, when Willow resurected Buffy, Spike was the only one Buffy could turn to for comfort, since he had experience in being dead. Spike and Buffy began sleeping together until ultimately she broke it off, Spike was devestated and proceded to attempt rape. Spike felt guilt for this, knowing he should'nt he left Sunnydale and journeyed to Africa, after enduring torture and pain he was rewarded with a soul.
Once Spike retuned to Sunnydale the First Evil realised what a threat he was and began to try and control him getting him to kill people and turn them. Spike was able to withstrain the first's control long enough to tell Buffy what he'd been doing. Taking Spike into her house, Buffy and her friends worked on curing Spike. While this was happening, Angel was given an amulet by the lawfirm Wolfram & Hart that was apparently needed in the final battle in Sunnydale, the amulet was to be someone ensouled, but more than human. Angel headed for Sunnydale intending to wear it himself. Once arriving Buffy told him to leave, Angel gave the amulet to her for Spike to wear.
During the battle, every potential in the world was activated, causing the birth of thousands of slayers, enabling them to fight the Ubervamps inside the hellmouth, when all hope seemed lost the amulet positioned Spike underneath the entrance to the hellmouth and smashed a hole through to the sky, letting the suns rays beam down and reflect all around the cavern, killing every ubervamp, killing Spike and destroying Sunnydale.
Note - The following is from "potential" versions of Angel Seasons 5 & 6, I'm not saying this is what's definately happening, I have no idea
The amulet, it turned out, was cursed, Lilah had intended for Angel to use it. When Spike died his essence was trapped in the amulet, when unknown forces brought the amulet back to the LA branch of Wolfram & Hart, Spike was returned, against his will to the mortal coil in spirit form and connected to the amulet, which made Spike property of W&H, and unable to go and find Buffy. Turning to Fred for help she was eventually able to find a way to return Spike to flesh using a combination of science and magic, an extremely surprised Willow came to help with the experiment, which was a success. Spike asked Willow not to tell Buffy he was back, but she found out and came for a very difficult visit.
Even though Spike was no longer a ghost, he was still a vampire and still confined to Los Angeles, he was unable to leave the city, much like the Master being unable to leave the church. Angel figured out that this was because the amulet belonged to Wolfram & Hart, and signed it over to Spike, freeing him to do what he wished. Spike decided to stay in LA as he was convinced it was where he could do the most good. Over time Wesley discovered that it was Spike who was destined to one day shanshu, which strained the already strained relationship between Spike and Angel.
When one of the senior partners decided the firm was taking to long with it's apocalypse it took matters into it's own hands and set about destroying the world on it's own, Spike however stopped him in time, once again averting the apocalypse, and becoming alive, but not in a form any of them expected.
