Upala, Alajuela

The daughter of the family with whom we stayed the first week very kindly invited us to come stay with her in Upala, far north by the Nicaraguan border. The trip up there turned out to be a real treat because it took us over the central ridge of volcanoes, so we crossed from the dry and dusty province of Guanacaste to the lush, rainy and green province of Alajuela.

Our friend's house was white, relatively new and featured a ladder-like staircase to the second floor, which she wanted to replace. (Costa Ricans seem to build and expand their houses throughout their lifetimes) Here you see Laurenz dozing in the yard and me drawing him.

I loved the neighbor's house because it was bright pink. The small dog featured in the first picture actually belonged to them, but she hung out a lot at our friends', especially at dinnertime. Her name is Roby and she is SOOOO cute I wanted to take her with me.
