Spiral Learning, Wholistic Learning, Learning in Community![]() Developing a sense of community among diverse people through shared learning is a developing dream of herbologist, musician, midwife, and homeschooling mother Janice Marsh-Prelesnik. The Center for Spiral Learning has grown from a concept that I had twenty years ago while in college studying music education. During those years of young adulthood I was asked to understand and embrace educational philosophies with which I could not agree. The reductionist and linear methods of education they taught may be fine for a few--perhaps five percent--of students, but most people do not learn well with the "read a book, take a test" and "listen to a lecture" methodologies. Instead, I believe that true learning happens in a wholistic way, almost by osmosis, integrating imagination into the whole person. I have also found that many people learn best in a spiral; looking at the bigger picture with concepts and ideas, making connections, and then spiraling inward to learn the details. I have always deeply believed that learning best happens when people are allowed to learn at their own pace, with their own learning style. The Spiral Learning Center is being realized as a place for people who are wholistic, spiral learners, a place to make connections, and a place to find individual paths of learning; engaging in conversation, asking questions, and looking at the big picture of life. Albert Einstein once said, "Imagination is more useful than knowledge." Our imaginations run with ideas, stories and possibilities as we look for connections in all of life and all studies. Our knowledge is not just gained in our heads, but spirals throughout our whole being. Learning is making connections, learning is integrated, and learning is always an adventure. |
