Meow and welcome! I found these numbers while researching and I was completely shocked! I knew over population
was a huge problem but, honestly, I had no idea they were this big. I hope this helps to show you, as it did me,
what a huge problem this is. I really hope that maybe this can help create a change that is so desperately needed.
Here is an example of the cat population:
You bring home a cute and cuddly kitten that you name Fluffy. You don't spay this adorable, fluffy kitten. In Fluffy's first year she will have approximately 12 more kittens. For some reason none of those are spayed/neutered either. Within 2 years Fluffy and kitties have 67 more unaltered pets. But they are so cute you just can't spay/neuter them either. The third year you have 376 kittens. By now, there is no way you can afford to spay or neuter these animals so they are left to breed, be strays, be abused, etc. After 4 years you have 2,107 kittens. Staggering isn't it? Read on. After 5 years you have 11, 801 kittens. After 6 years you have 66,088 kittens. After 7 years you have 370,092 kittens. After 8 years you have 2,072,514 adorable kitties. There's more. Finally after 9 years you will have an approximate total of 11,606,077 kittens! Can you care for more than 11 and a half million kittens? If you had gotten the one kitten altered there would be over 11 and a half million animals to die miserable deaths! Isn't it amazing what one cat can accomplish?
Here is an example of the dog population:
You bring home this adorable, sweet, intelligent puppy. Let's say you name her Fido. In Fido's first year, she has 16 puppies. Aren't they sweet? Again, they are left unaltered. The second year Fido and her pups have 128 puppies. Okay, altering is out of the question now, it would cost a fortune! So Fido and pups go through their third year and have 512 pups. Hard feeding them isn't it? Next year (4) they have 2,048 puppies. The fifth year they have 12,288 puppies. The sixth year they have 67,000 puppies! Can you care for them all? Was it really worth not having Fido spayed/neutered?
Did you learn anything? Isn't it staggering what can be caused by one irresponsible pet owner that thinks his little Fluffy and Fido are too precious to have spayed/neutered? Is it any wonder that there are so many animals left to starve, be abused, be abandoned, be tortured, and finally killed? Please think about what you are doing to these poor animals. They can't speak up and tell you that they don't want their babies to die!
