Name: Blossom.
Non-English Names: Belle (means "Beauty" - French), Bombón (means "Marshmellow", but is also a term of affection used to describe cute little girls - Mexican Spanish), Pétalo (translates to "Blossom" - Spanish that they talk in Spain). Thanks to Eevee for translating the Mexican name. If you're interesting, her name in Latin would be "Flora". You see? You were interested, weren't you?

Nicknames: Leader-Girl (said by Buttercup in Boogey Frights), Ice Princess (Buttercup again, Ice Sore), Little Miss Bossey-Boots (Buttercup again, Three Girls and a Monster), Red (Buttercup, Three Girls and a Monster), Little Miss Perfect (Buttercup again again, Equal Fights). The Perfect (Narrator, Bought And Scold). Although she hasn't been called it in an episode (I don't think), Internet fan-fiction has a thing for calling her "Bloss". It also has a thing for calling her "Leader-Girl" in every single fanfic ever written. Constantly. Over and over again.

Height: A smidge over 2 foot (ignoring her hair-bow. With it, she's just over 2 and a half foot). The opening of the pilot episode Crime 101 shows her height at three foot. At the rate they are going, she'll probably be only 3 inches tall by the time the third movie comes out.

Primarily Made From: Everything Nice. Which includes lollies, flowers, diamonds, rainbows, hearts, stars, ice-cream, a child laughing, and, er, kittens, unicorns and bunnies. Yes, Blossom is made of dead animals. (Okay, they could be stuffed toys. Or sweets. Or dead animals. Or animals that aren't dead. Take your pick.) The Professor says "one tablespoon of everything nice" in The Rowdyruff Boys, but every time we've seen it, it's been a lot more than that (it's a bucket-full in the title sequence alone. Wow, isn't this the most anal and pointless nitpick you've ever seen?).

In The Whoopass Girls short, "Everything Nice" is shown to be a birthday cake, a smiley face, flowers (Bubbles obviously has the right idea in Twisted Sister), stars and hearts, and a living (and happy) cat, rabbit, bird, and unicorn.

Attitude: Leader (and occasional mother-figure) to the other two. Smart, caring, the most mature of the girls, but still with a 5-year-olds tendencies. Sometimes a teensy bit full of herself. The rest of the time, a lot full of herself.

Defining Quotes: "Enough it enough - time to get Powerpuff tough!" - Just Desserts

"People of Citiesville! Fear no more! Behold your saviours—the Powerpuff Girls! Here to stamp out crime and villainy and bring safety to all!" - Town and Out

"No thanks necessary, Officer, just doing what comes naturally." - Town and Out

"Happy to you, log pony!" - Stray Bullet

Featured Episodes: Ice Sore, A Very Special Blossom, The Mane Event.

Blossom also tends to have the lion's share of dialogue in a lot of episodes that aren't about her specifically. Powerpuff Bluff, Slave the Day, Power Lunch, and Fallen Arches for example.

Best Smackdown: Princess in Stuck Up, Up and Away. Princess buys some hi-tech armour, and effortlessly slaughters Buttercup and Bubbles. She then tries to get Blossom who - without saying a word - beats the snot out of her (Son Goku-style, I might add).

Non-Standard Powers Shown: Ice Breath (Ice Sore onwards). Fire Breath (end of Ice Sore, although that was apparently only temporary). Ultra Sensitive Hearing (Mo Job). Ultra Super Negotiating Powers (Pet Feud, although we never see them). Knowledge of where to find giant jars (Insect Inside). While not strictly a power, she does have a bomb in her hair-bow (Forced Kin).

Other Skills: Extremely bright. Good tactical planner. Knows conversational Chinese (or studies it at any rate. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt). Plays electric guitar (impressive for someone without fingers). Supplies exposition at convenient moments. Can speak Japanese (according to the trivia quiz on the "Down 'n' Dirty" DVD, although I'm not sure what episode they got that from). Has really nice hair. Can communicate plans to her sisters even when in canine form.

Hates: Being thrown into walls (check it out whenever it happens. It really pisses her off. I don't know why it annoys her more than, for example, being thrown into the ground. Maybe it messes up her ponytail). Also hates being wrong.

Number of times Blossom doesn't have her hair in a ponytail: Beginning of The Mane Event (and most of the rest of it too, unless you count having some hair stuck to the back of your head as being a ponytail). Several points in Down n' Dirty. At one point during Forced Kin she doesn't have the bow or barrette on, but her hair still hangs behind her head (albeit in a more spread out manner).

Number of times Blossom has worn something other than her pink dress and nightie: Geisha outfit briefly at the end of Powerpuff Bluff. Dungarees and shirt for a couple of seconds in Impeach Fuzz. Space suit (really cool space suit) in both Uh-oh Dynamo and Helter Shelter. Scarecrow disguise (with Bubbles and Buttercup) in Beat Your Greens. Bikini at the start of Uh-oh Dynamo and in Superfriends. A monster outfit (that Buttercup also wore) in The Powerpuff girls Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever. A bucket and a towel/cape in The Powerpuff Girls Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever. High heals and, er, stuffed toys (I'm not commenting) in The Powerpuff Girls Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever. Prison outfit at the end of A Very Special Blossom. Cartman (from South Park) style bobble hat and overcoat in Imaginary Fiend. Liberty Belle outfit for pretty much all of Super Zeroes. A big undercover/flasher overcoat (with Bubbles and Buttercup) in Candy is Dandy. Mojo Jojo-style helmet in Forced Kin. A red lifegurad outfit (with a white cross on it. She carried a whistle too) in Powerprof. About a million costumes when playing dress-up in Slumbering With The Enemy. Nothing at all in both Down 'n' Dirty and Nano Of The North.

Voice Actress: Catherine Cavedini.

From Whooping Asses to, er Powering Puffs: These shots are taking from the Whoopass Stew title sequence, and the regular Powerpuff Girls title sequence. Note that Whoopass Blossom doesn't have her ponytail in this shot. It's missing from the whole sequence of the girls running towards the camera, but it is in the rest of the cartoon (mainly - it does disappear in a couple of other shots, but let's give Craig a break, eh?). The characters have continued to evolve over the series (mainly in a continuation of what is seen here. The head gets bigger, the body and limbs get smaller, the cuteness factor is increased).

From TV to Movie: If you want to be scared, he's a comparison of Blossom's standard end of episode "Victory" pose from both the movie and the TV series. The sizes here assume that Blossom is meant to look younger (although indications are that the designs will carry on over to the series. The heights might change though). Generally a human being's eyes remain the same size throughout his life. If that's true, then Blossom ends up like this...

TV Blossom Movie Blossom

At the rate the girls are shrinking, by 2006 they'll be nothing more than a giant pair of eyes. Blossom's bow is also huge here (in fact, far bigger than is it even in other movie pictures). It makes her look slightly like a bunny. Aww.

About: The smartest, the cleverest, the most mature. Blossom seems to have taken Spider-Man's mantra of "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" to heart. Bubbles saves the day because, well, that's the nice thing to do. Buttercup does it because she gets to beat up people. Blossom? For her, it's their duty. She has a responsibility to protect the people of Townsville, and she will do that with all the resources at her disposal. And yet, at the same time she is only a five year old girl. This dichotomy is more interesting in her than either of her sisters. Her take-charge attitude, her ability to think clearly in a crisis where people could get hurt contrasts with the same girl who wants to play dress-up. The two sides of her personality are nicely shown in Boogie Frights. Although not as badly as Bubbles, Blossom is clearly scared by the Buttercup's winding up about the Boogie Man. Like any small child, the idea of a monster under her bed frightens her. Yet later that night, she goes out and faces him, tough and business-like.

Outside the show, the perception of Blossom has been mixed. Often passed over for her two more obvious sisters, Blossom seems destined to spend her life languishing at the bottom of most popular PPG polls. Why? I think the problem can be illustrated by quoting an interview with Craig McCraken from The City Of Townsville web-site.

"They're all a combination of cuteness and toughness. With Bubbles being more cute that tough and Buttercup being more tough than cute and Blossom right in the middle equal parts cute and tough."

So you've got Bubbles, who is ultra-cute, and loved by all the girly-girls. At the other end, you've got the ultra-tough Buttercup, beloved of boys who feel slightly embarrassed about watching a cartoon about girls, and so need to latch on to the most violent thing available. And, in the middle, you have "the other one", the sensible one, with the least famous and experienced voice out of the three. Being stuck between EG "I do Tommy and have been in Friends" Daily, and Tara "I do Dil and have the most adorable voice ever and everyone loves me so nyah!" Strong is going to be hard for anyone to do well. Faced with a choice of cute or hardcore, who's going pick the one who's "a bit of both" to be their favourite?

Well, me for one. I've only recently realised this as I always found Bubbles the funniest (funniest out of the girls I mean. There's no topping Mojo for sheer comedy class). I still do, but there's something about Blossom that makes her my overall favourite. It could be that she has the most depth to her personality. When the show started, she was often regulated to being "the leader", the "clever one", and forced to spout a lot of exposition, and that just isn't interesting. While all three of the girls are arguably caricatures, Blossom was the most generic of the caricatures, and so the least immediately appealing. Overtime though, her personality has developed, more than the other two girls, and she does have several good and bad traits. Her arrogance, her belief that she is always right. Her maternal instinct (she often plays the "mother-role" to the girls), the nice mix of maturity and "little-girlness" present in her. The fact that she can probably relate to the Professor the best out of the three girls. And, of course, her adorable floppy red-bow, with bomb. What more perfect symbol for the combination of cuteness and massive destructive powers could you ask for?

Cavedini also doesn't get enough credit. True, her voice doesn't immedietly stand out as much as the other two girls, but again, that's due to the nature of her character. Strong just has to play "cute", and Daily "tough", whereas Cavedini has to pull off the more akward mix of "a bit cute, a bit tough, with a bit of authority". By design, she can't have a more cute voice than Bubbles, or a tougher voice than Buttercup. The fact that the voice she does fits Blossom perfectly deserves credit. It's a lovely mix of the other two voices. Cavedini has improved as the show as gone on and they've allowed her to do more things. In season 1, she was always the authorative "Little Miss Goody Goody", but in later episodes she gets to do a lot more. She covered a large number of emotions in A Very Special Blossom, and sounded adorable when she apologised at the end. She was also especially good in Super Zeros, delivering "Liberty Belles" lines in a slightly stilted voice (although it's hard to find anything wrong with that episode. Obviously everyone has overdosed on some kind of crazy "good TV making" drug before they made it). Cavedini's also really good at doing pissed-off, which is when Blossom's at her best. It's always fun watching the calm and rational ones going mental.

If you're going to do something actually serious too, Blossom's the best one to do it with. In a lot of ways, Blossom getting upset in "Speed Demon" came across better than Bubbles getting upset (and not just because that was the first time Blossom had cried). In the more "serious" (or at least the less "wacky") episodes, such as "Town and Out", Blossom (and Buttercup) usually sound better than Bubbles, who occasionally comes across as more of a caricature than she is meant to be. Blossom fits well in any situation.

You have to give the girl credit for trying too. Whereas cute ickle Bubbles seems have been born with the ability to understand any language on Earth (human or animal), Blossom has to learn it all manually. And anyone who can spend their free time brushing up on "conversational Chinese" deserves a lot of credit (or to be smacked upside the head and told to do something more fun.) She knows she's less cute than Bubbles, so she gives herself an adorable floppy hair-bow. She knows that she's less tough than Buttercup, so she (subconsciously) develops ice-breath, to make herself harder. Okay, I've made that up. Doesn't mean it's not true though. Nyah. Still, when you come down to it, she's a fighter. She has to keep the girls together, while constantly being made to feel inferior to both of them. Plus, she's ginger. And she has pink eyes (Pink! At least the other two have normal colours). She really has the odds stacked against her. But she still comes through, and she's my favourite. She also seems to be a favourite of the best fanfic and Puffcomix writers. I couldn't tell you why they like her the best, but to get an idea, you should check out some of there work.

It should also be noticed that Blossom is probably the most indispensable member of the Powerpuff Girls. If there was no Bubbles, they'd still be able to save the day (providing we ignore the character specific episodes). Without Buttercup, they'd have a tougher time saving the day, but they'd still do it. Without Blossom though, they'd fall apart. She is the one who comes up with 99% of the plans. She's the one who stops Buttercup and Bubbles from spending all their time arguing. She is, in thought and action, the leader.

For those our there who loved the movie, just wait till the sequel with the Rowdyruff Boys comes out.
