STORY OF 2006 |
January The year started with Aaron Downey donning the captain’s armband and leading The Reds into battle against old adversaries Mottingham Park Rangers at Eltham Town. He scored that day along with Terry Wilson and Paul Boorman, but mistakes at the back saw the team slip to a battling 4-3 defeat. However, the next week the same battling qualities saw the team pick up their first point of the season against Clifton. The team led 1-0, but fell behind and it took a goal from the halfway line from Perry Bignell to steal a last-gasp point. Sporting then travelled to league leaders Woodlands. Paul Boorman put The Reds ahead after 20 minutes, but Woodlands’ class told and they took all three points with three late goals against a tiring Sporting team. 8th Sporting St George 3-4 Mottingham Park Rangers (CUP) T.Wilson, Downey, P.Boorman 15th Sporting St George 3-3 Clifton Bignell, P.Boorman, C.Boorman 22nd Woodlands 3-1 Sporting St George P.Boorman February Sporting travelled to Avery Hill to face Anatolia in the opening fixture this month. However, Anatolia’s incompetence led to the referee leaving as he did not believe that the teams were there. The match ended up being played as a friendly and Sporting lost a bruising encounter. The only bright spot was that talented teenager Nathan Boorman netted his first goal for the club late on in this match. Sporting then played back to back matches against Thistlebrook Wanderers. The match at Goddington Park ended in a 5-3 defeat, with Cy Boorman netting twice in vain. Strike partner Aaron Downey was hauled down in the area, and he dusted himself down to net the resulting penalty. The return match was closer, however Cy, Aaron and Lee Wilson netted goals that were not enough to get any points – Sporting losing 4-3 in the end. 5th Anatolia Rangers 3-1 Sporting St George (FRIENDLY) N.Boorman 19th Sporting St George 3 – 5 Thistlebrook Wanderers C.Boorman (2), Downey (pen) 26th Thistlebrook Wanderers 4 – 3 Sporting St George Downey, C.Boorman, L.Wilson March This month started with Sporting claiming their first victory of a difficult season. In the relegation six-pointer at Goddington, Matt netted an 88th minute winner against Villagers to give Sporting a fighting chance of climbing off the bottom of the table. The next match was a tough friendly against higher league opposition in the form of Springhill Old Boys. Despite Cy Boorman’s best efforts (netting twice), the team lost 5-2. However they learned some valuable lessons, lessons which saw them take a point from a highly-charged encounter with Eltham Squadron. Mark Jarman, Cy Boorman and Paul Boorman were on the scoresheet as Sporting finally lifted themselves off the bottom of the table. 5th Sporting St George 1 – 0 Villagers ‘B’ Matt 12th Sporting St George 2 – 5 Springhill Old Boys (FRIENDLY) C.Boorman (2) 19th Sporting St George 3-3 Eltham Squadron Jarman, C.Boorman, P.Boorman April Jason Woollard was taken to hospital with concussion as part of Sporting’s 3-0 defeat at eventual title winners Barca Rovers. Cy Boorman was punched by the goalkeeper, and also picked up by the throat by another player, but they both escaped punishment. As a result of their injustice, Sporting took their anger out on Clifton Reserves, securing their biggest win of the season thanks to goals from Cy Boorman, Paul Boorman and Dan Conlon. However, the season would end on a low note, Jason Woollard netting a consolation as Sporting lost 7-1 to Anatolia Rangers at Mottingham Playing Fields. 2nd Barca Rovers 3-0 Sporting St George - 9th Clifton Reserves 0 – 3 Sporting St George C.Boorman, P.Boorman, Conlon 23rd Anatolia Rangers 7-1 Sporting St George Woollard August August saw the start of a new era for Sporting. It began at Tudor Sports, where they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to higher division Clifton. Paul Boorman scored the goal of the match, chipping the keeper from 30 yards on the volley. A bad-tempered defeat was next for The Reds, as they led for most of the match but lost to Woolwich 90. Aaron Shaw and Anthony Boorman saw red for Sporting in a match that was ruined by poor refereeing. The hangover continued against Orpington Town Church, where late goals from Aaron Downey and Lee Wilson could not prevent the team losing 3-2. 6th Clifton 3-2 Sporting St George (FRIENDLY) P.Boorman, A.Boorman 13th Woolwich 90 6-4 Sporting St George (FRIENDLY) C.Boorman (2), T.Wilson, A.Boorman 19th Orpington Town Church 3-2 Sporting St George (FRIENDLY) Downey, L.Wilson September Sporting claimed their first win of the season against Clifton at Goddington Park. Aaron Downey came on and set up Keith Simmonds after 18 seconds, and scored twice to give the team a deserved 4-3 win. The result was marred by the news that Jason Woollard fractured his cheekbone during the match. He would not play for the rest of the year. The League got underway, and Lee Wilson rescued a point late on for Sporting in a poor performance against Orpington Park. The next week did not go to well either – Aaron Downey missed an early penalty as Sporting crashed to a 5-2 home defeat against Orpington Town 3rds. However the first win of the league season was notched at Avery Hill against New Cross. Graham McQuillan scored the pick of the goals, in what has been judged as “Goal of the Month” by the League Committee. 3rd Sporting St George 4-3 Clifton (FRIENDLY) Downey (2), L.Wilson, Simmonds 10th Orpington Park 1-1 Sporting St George L.Wilson 17th Sporting St George 2-5 Orpington Town 2nds L.Wilson, Garner 24th New Cross Wanderers 3-5 Sporting St George C.Boorman, N.Boorman, Garner, McQuillan, Simmonds (pen) October October was a better month for Sporting, which started with the giantkilling of the Presidents Cup as they defeated Senior Division AFC Blackfen at Goddington Park. A wholly deserved 4-3 win came thanks to goals from Ant Boorman, Danny Garner and Keith Simmonds. The win spree continued against rock bottom Mottingham Park Rangers. A 4-1 win at Sparrows Lane ended a run of four successive defeats against Rangers and put Sporting second in the table. The month ended however with a disastrous 7-1 defeat against Villagers at Goddington Park, Terry Wilson notching Sporting’s goal. 1st Sporting St George 4-3 AFC Blackfen (CUP) A.Boorman (2), Garner, Simmonds 8th Mottingham Park Rangers 1-4 Sporting St George P.Boorman, Simmonds, Garner, N.Boorman 29th Sporting St George 1-7 Villagers (CUP) T.Wilson November November was a mixed month, that started with two wins against Northumberland Heath and Orpington Town 3rds. However, a 4-1 defeat at Pro Evolution Soccer United and a 7-0 humiliation against league leaders Bermondsey Wall rocked Sporting’s confidence, and this would show in December. 5th Sporting St George 2-1 Northumberland Heath A.Boorman, L.Wilson 12th Orpington Town 3rds 1-2 Sporting St George (CUP) Simmonds (2) 19th Pro Evolution Soccer United 4-1 Sporting St George (CUP) Garner 26th Bermondsey Wall 7-0 Sporting St George - December Sporting faced the two bottom teams in this month, and only came out with one point to show for it. The Reds were caught off guard by a powerful Mottingham team, who took all three points from Goddington with a 4-2 win. Sporting also found themselves 3-0 down at half time to Blackheath Social Reserves, but second-half goals from Danny Garner, Nathan Boorman and Paul Boorman grabbed a last-ditch point. 10th Sporting St George 2-4 Mottingham Park Rangers P.Boorman 17th Sporting St George 3-3 Blackheath Social Reserves N.Boorman, P.Boorman, Garner Scorers 2006 Cy Boorman 11 Paul Boorman 9 Aaron Downey 6 Danny Garner 6 Keith Simmonds 6 Lee Wilson 6 Anthony Boorman 5 Nathan Boorman 4 Terry Wilson 3 Perry Bignell 1 Dan Conlon 1 Mark Jarman 1 Graham McQuillan 1 Jason Woollard 1 |
