After Spot and Birdie had sold their papes, they were strolling around, holding hands, and having the time of their lives. Suddenly, Shinah ran up and said, "Hey Spot! Sorry that I'm distoibin' you an' all, but dey're s a scab who says he can soak ya! Feel like soakin' someone today?" spot grinned and looked over to Birdie, "Hey stay heah for a sec all right?" Birdie grinned and said, "Punch 'em hard in the face just for me!" Spot kissed her forehead and followed Shinah. Birdie sat down and waiting for Spot to return as she hummed a tune she had heard Medda sing. "Hey deyre." Birdie was startled and looked behind her to see a newsie she was quite unfamiliar with. He spit in his hand and held is out to her, and she took this as a sign of peace or friendliness. She spit shook with him, and said "So I haven't seen yeh before....you from Brooklyn?" The stranger showed her his slingshot. She grinned and said, "Guess so." He grinned and said, "So where's Spot?" Birdie laughed and said, "He's out soakin' some scab. He'll be back soon though." The stranger grinned even wider and said, "Ah, I see. Wanna come ova heah wit me?" Birdie felt uneasy and said, "Nah, I told Spot I'd wait right heah for him." The stranger scoffed and said, "Pssh, c'mon. I can treat yeh bettah den dat Spot Conlon." Birdie really didn't feel comfortable with this newsie. In fact, she had a feeling he was either a traitor or not from Brooklyn. She stayed put and said, "I'm staying right here." The stranger snarled and said, "All right den goilie, yeh leave me no choice." He grabbed her arm and she wrenched away from him. All of a sudden, from behind her several strong hands grabbed her and covered her mouth. She bit their hands and heard some yelp from pain, but they still hung on. She kicked and screamed and bit thrashed about, but she still couldn't loosen their grasp. Spot grinned and said, "DAT'S WHAT YEH DESOIVE, SAYIN DAT YOU COULD SOAK ME!" The scabber was retreating, running with a limp and holding their arm in pain. Spot and his newsies laughed and they all patted spot on the shoulder to congratulate him. "Tanks boys, if yeh see any moah scabbas den yeh can 'ave de honah of soakin' dem on behalf of me. I'm gonna spend da rest of da day wit Boidie." Spot went back to where he had seen Birdie, but discovered she was gone. He then noticed a piece of paper where she was sitting. If yu want to see yore gurl ever agan then kum to Harlem. you know ware Spot crumpled up the paper and anger boiled up inside of him. "WHY THE HELL DO THEY HAVE TO DO THIS?!?!?!" yelled Spot. He rushed off to Harlem, and in a bush nearby was Marbles, listening, who quickly crept off to inform the other newsies of what happened. Spot ran as fast as his legs could carry him to the Harlem lodging house. He flung the door open and ran up the stairs. No one was in sight. Then Spot realized, The warehouse! Harlem newsies would hang out at an abandoned warehouse. He ran over and opened the door, to see Birdie tied up in a chair. She saw Spot and her eyes widened and she tried to say something. Spot ran over to her and began to untie her. When her ropes came a little bit loose, Spot was hit in the head and went careening backwards. He looked up, dazed and saw several burly looking newsies looking down at him, snickering. He grabbed his slingshot and marbles and began shooting at them, punching, and kicking and using his cane. Suddenly the newsies stopped trying to block their faces and looked up. A newsie, obviously the leader, began to walk up to Spot. Spot looked up and glared. "Knuckles." "Aw, yeh rememba me! How flatterin'." growled Knuckles. He punched Spot right in the jaw. Spot fell backwards and held his jaw. Knuckles didn't get his name just randomly. His knuckles seemed to be harder than rocks. Knuckles laughed and said, "So, the famous Spot Conlon, is going to meet his downfall taday." Spot winced from the pain of his mouth as he spoke, "Just let Boidie go." Knuckles laughed and all his newsies sniggered. "Ah yes, well, we tink we're gonna finish her off too. Da happy couple, gettin' soaked togedda." Spot swept out Knuckles legs, and jumped on top of him, putting his cane to his throat. Knuckles gagged and was silenced with a hard punch followed by several others. Spot was feeling like a killer. His eyes burned with rage, but was suddenly pulled off of Knuckles by several newsies. Knuckles staggered to his feet, and slowly walked up to Spot who was being held against the wall. Knuckles bared his teeth and said, "Byebye spot Conlon." he held up his fist. Someone tapped Knuckles on the shoulder, and he turned around. Standing there was Birdie, grinning. "BYEBYE!" Birdie cried. She drew back her fist and slammed it into Knuckles' face as hard as she could. Knuckles fell backwards and hit his head on a pole nearby, knocking him out. "HOLY SH*T THAT HURT!!!!" yelped Birdie. She shook out her hand yelling OW OW OW OW OW!!! Spot grinned and just when other newsies were about to go and grab Birdie, the door was knocked down. Everyone looked up to find several Brooklyn newsies, led by Marbles, in the doorway. Birdie and spot both grinned at the sight of them. Marbles charged in with all the other newsies, soaking any newsie they saw. Most newsies ran away yelling, knowing they had no chance against all of Brooklyn. For once in his life, Spot was glad he wasn't just alone with Birdie. Part 6 |
