I bought the Raider in the spring of 2000 for $800. While it was in rought shape it had a straight body and the off road package.
In the year and a half I have owned it I has undergone a pretty big fix up and cleanup.
The engine, transmission brakes and suspension have all been freshened up or rebuilt.
New BFG 31 x 10.5 AT tires were fitted and the entire vehicle was given a good cleaning. |

Turbocharged and intercooled the Raider is a lot more fun to drive. |

The prep work started with machining the block for the oil jets that spray the piston bottoms. These squirters help keep the pistons cool when using a turbocharger and are standard on the Starion / Conquest engine blocks.
The standard Montero Raider block after about 1987 has bosses to allow them to be fitted.
Once the machining was done for the jets the block was sent out for honing to fit .020" oversized pistons. When the machining was finished the block was washed using an engine brush kit to flush hidden dirt from the oil galleries |

If you compare the right and left photos you can see where extra webbing around the crank was removed. This allows better for breathing around the crankshaft. These extra "wings" are a leftover from a early emmision device that was driven by air pulses from the bottom of the #3 piston. The photo on the right also shows the oil squirters installed.
Also notice how the factory puts grooves in the main bearing housings and then uses grooved bearings. |
