INTRODUCTION:

The country of Pakistan, formally created on August 14, 1947, is in fact a region with an astonishing rich history of 4000 years. The name Pakistan means "The Land of Pure People". It was Allama Iqbal who thought of this Muslim nation, Chaudhry Rahmat Ali proposed the name Pakistan and finally Jinnah turned the dream into a reality. Stretching from the Arabian Sea in the south to the mighty convergence of lofty peaks in the north, Pakistan stands at one of the world's most important crossroads.

Pakistan stretches from the Arabian Sea to the high mountains of Central Asia and covers an area of 803,944 square kilometers (310,322 square miles). The distance from southwest to northwest is 1,800 kilometers (1,120 miles) and the southern coastline along the Arabian Sea is nearly 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) long. From west to east, Pakistan is bordered by Iran, Afghanistan, China and India. Today the country is divided into four provinces Sindh, Baluchistan, Punjab and the North West Frontier Province and two other regions, the Northern Areas (Gilgit, Hunza, Chitral , Skardu) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Geographically Pakistan falls into three main regions, the mountainous north where the Hindukush, Karakoram and Himalayan ranges meet, the vast but but sparsely populated plateau of Baluchistan and the Punjab and Sindh plains of the Indus river and its five mail tributaries. The Indus plains apart, Pakistan is mostly mountainous and plateaus. Pakistan has the densest concentration of high mountains in the world, five peaks over 8,000 metres(28,000 feet) and 101 peaks over 7,000 metres(23,000 feet) above sea-level within a radius of 180 kilometres(112 miles).
