In the OVA there were three goddesses that possessed immense power, and all three brought a state of balance to the universe. Tsunami is one of them, as are Washu and Tokimi. As a physical being, Tsunami looks like that of a tree. From her she blessed the Jurains and their ships with her power. All of the Jurain ships come from her, as she is the "First Generation" Jurain Battleship. All Trees that came from her, and herself included, can transform into a spaceship as long as they don't take root in non-Jurai soil. It is also said that she MAY have given each Jurain his/her own source of power, but the Jurain trees (also containing Tsunami's power) help bring it out for easier use. Another theory is that Tsunami simply lets her power filter down into the trees, and the Jurains draw ALL of their power from the trees, and don't make any of it themselves. Like all Jurain Trees, a branch from Tsunami can and was broken off to create the key to control her shipworm. A branch from a 1st Generation tree like Tsunami controls all Generations below it, a branch from a 2nd Generation tree like Funaho controls all Generations except for 1st, which is above it....and so on.

Tsunami's power consists of mostly "Lighthawk Wings," like the other goddesses. In ship form and human form she can control a total of 10. Most other ships can control only one wing. Contrary to popular belief, Lighthawk wings do NOT block energy that hits them. They convert the energy into a harmless form, not block it. Some Jurains themselves can control Lighthawk Wings. Yosho can control one, as he is probably the best Jurain Swordsman there is. Tenchi, who was created by Tsunami (Tsunami helped out Achika and Noboyuki during Tenchi's birth, and actually let a part of her be one with Tenchi). Thus Tenchi is the closest thing a Jurain can have to being as strong as Tsunami. He can control a total of 3 wings.

Since Tsunami is the most powerful ship, she would be naturally be sought after by megalomaniacs like Kagato. 700 years ago, he attacked Jurai with a brainwashed Ryoko and Ryo-Ohki. When a stray ship was hit and slammed into the building where the trees are held, Sasami fell to her death. Her blood mixed with the watering trough to Tsunami, and sensing Sasami's fading life Tsunami merges with her, brining Sasami back to life. However, Tsunami will not fully fuse with Sasami until her soul is ready. When that happens, Sasami will BE Tsunami, and vice versa.
