Japanese for Baka's |
How many of you have read a fanfic that contains Japanese phrases and became completely lost? I know I have! So since I had nothing better to do, I started learning what some of these words meant...Next thing I knew, I had a list of over 100 words! I figured that I might as well put my new found knowledge to use, so I'm making a course for baka's like myself! I've made this as simple as possible, but this is really difficult because the same word can mean a number of things depending on the setting, form, and tone used when speaking. Take the word yurusu for example. Now alone, this word means to forgive or pardon. When used as a verb however, the word is changed to Yurushite kudasai and translates to "Forgive me!". The most common forms, yurusanai and yurusenai, translate to "I won't/can't forgive you!" That's not all though! If the word is shouted or growled, it can mean a number of things. In a contemporary setting, it can mean "You're finished!" In a historical setting, it can mean "I will grant no quarter!" It can also mean "Your day is done", "It's curtains for you", "You're through", ect.... So you can see why it's hard to limit a word to one specific translation. If I couldn't figure out what the word would translate to in a conversation, then I just wrote down what the word means. Does anyone else find it disturbing that I'm starting to know more about the Japanese language than English? |
