Energon

Energon is, in short, the fuel source used by the Transformers. Although the various universes show energon in different forms with different properties, there is no reason to believe that energon cannot take on all these forms without requiring competing explanations.

Cartoon (US and UK):

Energon has been shown with a liquid viscosity, the ability to be stored in certain containers, and the ability to be compressed. Mostly seen in cubes, but were also depicted in the form of solid rods. The cubes were mostly seen with the Decepticons, but by 2005, Hot Rod and Kup carried some energon

Beast Wars Addendum:

"Unstable" energon is depicted as crystals, which release energon (in some form) into the atmosphere (hence the "dangerously high energy levels"). Following the attack of a giant alien weapon, the vast majority of the energon crystals on Earth were converted to "stable" energon cubes.

Comic (US and UK):

Energon was depicted on at least one occasion as a solid rod. It has also been shown as small cubes, and apparently is widely accepted by several intergalactic races as currency.
