Yester Eve

The students of the university had finally left the bland classrooms behind for the grandeur of the wilderness in the mystical natural resort located outside of their university town.

Last night was quite cool, and the pitch dark welcomed new and young lovers to wonder about the forest paths. Such a pair was lost in the depth of enchanting forest, far, far from the rest of their companions. Their names were Heather and Mike.

Heather and Mike were only slightly worried about being lost, after all they needed time alone and away from their group of friends. As a gentle gail brushed their cheeks, they were surprised that they were shivering. But something in the darkness breathed life and warmth, and comforted their loneliness.

Suddenly, some thick textured cloth fell over them and crushed them to the ground. Thinking it was a joke orchestrated by their crazy friends, Heather and Mike thought nothing of it. Before they even struggle, they lost consciousness as though their life's breath was being sucked out of them.

Heather woke many hours later back in the lodges their group had rented. Her friends had said nothing about the night before, and she decided that it was all a fantastic dream. But it was far more than that...

Heather felt Mike's presence before she saw him. It was strange, quite unlike the feeling of subconsciously detecting someone else. She actually picture him walking into her room. She smiled at him and saw his wicked grin. He revealed long, white fangs tips reddened by blood.

Heather dropped the comb in her hand and froze in the middle of the room. For one who did not show emotions often, her fear was written plainly on her white cheeks.

Mike said, "Heather, I have discovered something. I am a vampire."

He showed off his fangs again, causing Heather retreated a step and banged into the dresser.

"Don't worry, I think we were turned into vampires when we were out in the forbidden part of the forest last night. Well, I certainly was. I wanted to check if you are too."

Mike brushed the long, brown hair away from Heather's neck, and surely enough, two red circles marked her, a sign of a newly made vampire. Mike gleefully exclaimed his happiness to discover that Heather was as he was.

Heather turned to the mirror and as she laid eyes on her neck, she screeched for the first time in her life.

The number of unaccountable death was rising in the area. Mostly guys from the local university. From classrooms, to dorms, to bars, young men were disappearing left and right.

Yang and Shannon, of course, thought it was strange. But both being engineering students, they didn't take much notice of this phenomenon.

Aside from academics, they were worried about Heather. For the week since their trip to the country, Heather hasn't been acting like herself. They thought perhaps Heather must simply be worried that Mike had disappeared. Heather now has so much free time that she would go to class well before dawn and leaving only after the last of the other students had left.

Yang and Shannon were entirely unconcerned about Mike's disappearance though. It was after all Mike, but they did not like Heather's distance one bit.

Then one night, Yang and Shannon decided to go surprise Heather before bed to cheer Heather up. They were shocked to find the room, once welcoming, full of bloody smudges and in total chaos, but no sign of Heather. Shannona was going to leave to report the vandalism just as they heard struggling sounds from within the closet. Yang quickly opened the door, to see two dead young men crushed near the bottom and the remaining surviver futily trying to avoid touching the dead corpses.

"What happened to you?" Yang asked as Shannon tried to unbound the surviver, but he just kept on shaking his head and his eyes reflected mortal fear so strong that it sufficated them.

"So you found out." Heather's voice startled both Yang and Shannon. They turned to see Heather with big, white fangs protruding from her mouth. They screamed in unison.

"Well, now you know. You will know all and more."

Yang and Shannon shivered, but listened quietly as Heather told them about that night in the forest and how she was turned into a vampire. She also said that now she could kill all the men that they had once joked about killing. Yang tuned out as she tried to find a way out of this predicament, but returned her attention to Heather's explanation. Heather complained that Mike tried to stop her, but she took care of it.

"There is nothing to stop me now." That were the final words, before Heather took off through the wide windows of her dorm.

"Shannon, we got to do something." Yang said, still looking out the opened window. The night and the cold wind never looked quite this menacing.

"I don't know."

"Maybe we can go to the forest where Heather fell victim. Maybe we can stop her as vampires." Yang suggested.

Shannon answered, "Or we can turn into worse vampires and kill everyone."

Yang nodded, "But I don't see any other choice. Do you?"

"True."

Shannon and Yang reached that part of the forest just before dawn. It was darkest before the sun rise and they sat on their heels waiting for the vampire to show up. Some time later they both fell asleep leaning on a tree stump.

Yang woke up screaming because her toes was in great pain; in fact, it was smoking. She realized that her toes were the only part of her not covered by the tree's shade. Suddenly, she realized that she was a vampire, and she jumped to her feet and turned to see Shannon passed out next to the tree. Yang woke Shannon up by rudely shaking Shannon. As Shannon opened her eyes, Yang said, "Guess what? I'm a vampire. My toes caught on fire when sunlight touched it."

Shannon said, "Is that really great?"

Yang didn't know, but Shannon and her went further into the forest to hide from the sunlight. They waited for the night to go confront Heather.

That night, Yang and Shannon wondered how they were going to find Heather. Then somehow, Yang seemed to see through someone else's eyes. She saw the dead body of some guy lying near a pond, and Yang knew that she was finally mentally linked to Heather now. She looked at Shannon and without a word from either of them they seem to agree to float towards the pond that Yang just saw.

They arrived quickly, and saw Heather smiling.

"I sensed that you guys were coming." Heather said by way of greeting.

"Heather, you have to stop!." Shannon said. Shannon tried to approach Heather.

"Hahahaha!" Heather laughed and said, "You are fools. You will soon feel as I do."

Yang had taken the time to walk around Heather, but just as she was close enough to attack Heather, Heather whirled around. Heather pushed Yang lightly, still Yang was thrown a good ten feet. Shannon tried in vain to help by struggling with Heather and Heather said, "You two are ridiculous. Your power as vampires haven't matured yet. There is no way you can stop me. Haha."

Heather leaped into the sky and disappeared from view. Shannon and Yang realized that they were helpless in the situation. They were just about to give up when they realized they were hungry. Yang looked at Shannon and silently promised that they would not turn into what Heather has become. They linked hands and made a vow that they'd rather die and as soon as they figure out a way to stop Heather, they would find a way to kill themselves.

As the night passed, they grew weaker and they shivered as they huddled together. Just as Yang was about to pass out, she sensed a call in the wind. It was faint, but she focused her last bit of energy on hearing the call.

"Yang, Shannon, I know you guys have turned into vampires. I can feel it. Come and free me damn it. Come on." It was Mike's voice, muffled and distant.

Yang closed her eye and she felt Shannon do the same thing. Somehow with their combined power, they managed to contact Mike. They saw through Mike's eyes. Mike was remembering his last day as a free man.

At first Mike had let Heather do as she pleased, but then he had doubts at Heather's many killings. They weren't necessary to feed her. Eventually, Mike wanted to stop her, but Heather sensed his intention first, and led Mike onto the mountain near the forest. Once up there, she lead him into a cave and opened a crystal coffin. She was strong enough to push Mike into the coffin and she slid the cover in before Mike had a chance to fight. She smiled and told Mike that he would eventually fall into stasis and remain there helpless until he was freed. She then told him her intention to go on killing. Heather laughed and left the cave.

Yang and Shannon shook out of their stupor and started heading towards the cave. Unfortunately, they ran out of time half way up the barren mountain and they died in the rising sun.
