He replaced his cup on the counter, removed his glasses and gently cleaned them for a minute or two. "So you were twins?" he asked. Sebastian only nodded slightly. "The council seem to think that, through some freak, Liz and the current slayer must have died at the same time. There's never been a case of a slayer having a twin before, but because we are...were... identical other than one chromosome, they believe that's why I gained the power. Liz wasn't 'available', so the power jumped to me. I'm only two minutes younger, so it kind of makes sense.""Not really," Giles replied "our whole understanding of the slayer line is that only women can be chosen." He put his glasses back on and stared at the young man sat before him, then looked at Buffy. "Don't ask me, I only work here" she said, raising her hands slightly in surrender. "But whatever the reason Giles, he has the power. He moves like Kendra and Faith and..." "Yourself." the watcher finished for her. "Yeah." "I've checked with Wesley in LA," he began. "How is the little snob anyway?" Buffy interrupted. Giles had to smile. Not matter how much he insisted the little twit had changed, Buffy never believed him. She would forever hold the view that Wesley was duller than an episode of Eastenders. "He's fine. He did some checking and apparently Faith was attacked 6 months ago. Her heart stopped twice." Buffy's eyes widened in question. "It seems she was attacked." "Wow, whoever her attacker was didn't try hard enough." "Buffy!" he said sharply. She returned his stare of disapproval with a look that would have even a thousand year old vamp running scared. "Giles, she shot my boyfriend, slept with Riley, held my mother hostage AND stole my body. The girl does not need any slack." "Be that as it may Buffy, Faith has been behaving herself. She didn't even try to defend herself. The other inmate in question has gained another 6 months to their sentence." "Okay, so Faith died and activated Captain Courageous over there." She jabbed a finger in the general direction of Sebastian. "So it would appear." Sebastian drained his cup and set it down with just enough force to cause the others to look at him. "It's all very well sitting here debating just why I was chosen, but in the end, it doesn't matter. I was, I am. That's that." "Very practical" Buffy noted, then glanced at Giles "You must be so proud." Sebastian ignored her, got up and walked to the stairs, where his coat was hung. The tiniest hint of metal showed beneath. He shoved a hand into an inside pocket, returned to the kitchen and presented an ancient parchment to Giles. "The council asked me to bring you this, no idea what it is, but given that they sent me rather than some runner can't be a good sign." Giles simply nodded in reply, his attention drawn to the parchment that he had unfolded before him. He made some small noises then looked up. "Did they say what it was?" "Nope, just that it was important to what was happening and that I had to get it to you as soon as I could." Buffy snorted in contempt. Off of their looks she answered them "Once again, the council comes through with another amazing piece of non-information." Giles pushed his glasses back up and looked her in the eye. "Buffy, we have no way of knowing yet what the council has sent us. It may very well be critical to both your survival and that of the slayers in training." "Yeah, I get that Giles. But come on, other than assigning you as my watcher can you tell me one useful thing they've actually done?" He sighed. "Well, they helped us identify Glory. They....." He stopped abruptly as Buffy cut him off "Giles, they told us she was a god, something that I'm sure more than one of us would have figured out sooner or later, even without their amazing assistance." Across town. The stone skittered across the asphalt of the path and disappeared into the underbrush. Another followed it. Then another. Then a curse. Amy Maddison sat on the bench, looking for a stone to kick. She was all out. She swore again. Ever since Willow had gone back on the straight and narrow, she'd had no one to play with. Even Rack was dead, drained by Willow of all energy. She sat their, pondering. She pulled herself up onto the picnic table and sat there, her legs swaying slightly. Slowly her swinging legs stopped and a thoughtful look passed over her face. She hopped down and headed home, a plan forming in her head. |
