Blonde Ambition
By Kevin Eck      WOW Magazine      May 2000

Whether she's strutting her stuff as Skye with the Nitro Girls or strolling down the aisle with her clipboard as Miss Hancock, Stacy Keibler has made her presence know during her short time in World Championship Wrestling.
It was only a few months ago that Keibler, a 20-year-old Baltimore Ravens cheerleader and a junior at Towson University, was watching Nitro every Monday and attending WCW shows as a fan. But it was obvious when the eight finalists for the new Nitro Girl, were announced on television in November 1999 that Keibler had a leg up on the competiton.
Standing 5-feet-11, the long-legged, svelte blonde who would become know as Skye stood head and shoulders above the other contestants and was a clear favorite of the fans. Shortly after winning the contest, however, Skye traded in her spandex shorts and go-go boots for a business suit and high heel to become Miss Hancock, the sexy companion of Standards and Practices.
WOW Magazine recently sat down with Keibler to discuss her new career, her ambitions and her thoughts on the portrayal of women in wrestling.

Q: Did you watch wrestling on television when you were growing up
?
A:
I was not into wrestling, but my grandmother was. When I would go to her house she may have been watching it. I knew who Hulk Hogan was and I knew who Miss Elizabeth was, but I really didn't know wrestling at all until three years ago.

Q: What got you interested in wrestling
?
A
: I went to a house show and saw one of the guys jump from the top rope and flip onto the other guy. I started appreciating it as an art. My boyfriend and his friends and I watched it so much that I started getting into it. We didn't miss pay-per-views, and we didn't miss any show that was within 300 miles of us. So we were watching one night and saw the ad for the Nitro Girl contest. I said, "Maybe I'll just go and see what it's like and, just for the fun of it, see how far I can get."

Q: So what happened next
?
A
: I went to Philadelphia [on Oct. 18, 1999], and about 60 girls showed up. I made it to the top two, we went to Nitro that Monday night, and the fans voted for me. Then there were eight girls, one from each region of the United States. The eight of us danced on Nitro and the fans voted. I won the position which was actually for an audition to be a Nitro Girl. But when I won, [WCW] said, 'We love you. We are going to send you a contract in the mai the next day.'

Q: You won some prize money as well, right?
A:
I received $1,000 for winning in Philly, and then I got $10,000 for winning the contest.

Q: How has your life changed since joining WCW?
A:
I go to college, but I live at home, so I've never been away from my parents. It's a big change being on the road by myself, but I've really matured quickly in the last two months. One big change is that I don't get to see my friends and family as much, but I make the best of it when I'm home.

Q: How is your boyfriend reacting to all of this?
A:
If it wasn't for him, I would never have watched wrestling and would have never entered the contest. I owe it to him. It's hard because I'm not home and it puts a stress on our [5 1/2 year] relationship. But he's taking it pretty well. He's happy for me.

Q: Are you going to continue to go to college?
A:
Yes. I will be getting internship credits for working with WCW. I'll be taking an Internet class and I'll be taking one class at school, so I'll still be a full-time student.

Q: How is it that you get internship creadits?
A
: I'm a mass communications major [with a 3.7 grade point average]. Being backstage, I get to see the producion end of the business, which helps me out with school.

Q:What were your career goals before getting involved in wrestling?
A
: I've been in the entertainment business since I was really young. I've done commercials, modeling and acting, and I've been dancing since I was 3 years old I can't see myself sitting at a desk. I've always wanted to be in front of the camera.

Q: Tell us about your acting career.
A
: I had a featured spot in "Pecker" [1998] by John Waters and I was a featured extra in "Liberty Heights" [1999]. When I was younger, I did extra work on movies and some commercials. If I wasn't involved in all that, this would be so overwhelming for me. Appearsances as a Ravens cheerleader and my background in dance, modeling and acting all helped me.

Q: What's going on with the Nitro Girls?
A
: Right now we are still feuding a little bit amongst ourselves [in the storyline]. We're not quite sure what they're doing with us. My understanding was that they would break us off into characters, but still have us dance as a group. There are so many changes in WCW nobody knows what's going on. It's a week-to-week thing.

Q: How has the talent in WCW treated you?
A:
I absolutely love being with this company. When I first won the contest, I didn't know how it would go. Watching the show, I thought, 'They're all going to walk around backstage, all thinking each one is better than the other,' and it is nothing like that. I fell like I'm not even new.

Q: Has anyone in particular taken you under their wing?
A
: The Nitro Girls as a whole. I'm like the little sister. I can call any one of them at any time about anything. It really is like a group of sisters sticking together. The one person that I have really clicked with is Torrie Wilson. She's such a great girl. She's beautiful, but she's not the least bit snobby.

Q: What do you think about the way in which women are portrayed in professional wrestling?
A:
The wrestling audience is primarily male, and the men want to see certain things. One of my first weeks on the job, Vince [Russo] and Ed [Ferrara] asked me what I'd be willing to do. That was the best thing in the world because coming into this I thought, 'Oh my God, they're going to make me mud wrestle; they're going to make me but a bathing suit on.' I had a lot of respect for them after they asked me what I would and wouldn't do. I told them I don't want to go out there in lingerie or mud wrestle, and they were cool about that (laughs).

Q: Almost every woman in wrestling who gets a push is surgically enhanced. You are not. How do you fell about the proliferation of breast implants in wrestling and would you consider getting them, if asked?
A
: I'm very natural. I don't have to wear a lot of makeup. If (implants) are what guys want to see, then they can see them on somebody else, because right now I don't need them and I don't whan them. There's nothing wrong with girls who have them. But at this point, everything seems to be going OK without them.

Q: Who came up with the idea of Miss Hancock?
A
: I was practicing with the Nitro Girls and Bill Blanks said, 'Stacy, we got something for you, Lenny and Lodi are coming back and they're going to be Standards and Practices. They're changing their whole look and we're going to have you be their secretary and just take notes.' The next wee I asked if I had a name, so Ed [Ferrar] said, 'We were thinking of, um, Miss Hancock.' I said, 'OK, that's cool.' Then all the boys started walking up and saying [in a sarcastic tone], 'Hi, Miss Hancock.' I didn't think about it [the double-entendre name] enough (laughs).

Q: Despite the name, the character seems to fit your personality - classy and sexy, not trashy.
A
: Exactly. They said, 'One week let's have you wear a see-through blouse.' And I said, 'Can't I just be in the suit for a couple of months first and then we'll take it further?' Who knows what's going to happen. One week I'm Skye and the next week I'm Miss Hancock.

Q: How long would you like to be involed in wrestling?
A:
This is like a dream come true for me. I'd like to be involved for awhile. Hopefully, it'll be a stepping stone to something else, maybe a part in a TV series or a movie.
