      Randall StandingHorse

Randall Started making flutes in late 1994 early 1995, he is self taught.
When he started making flutes he could not afford to buy the good flutes,
A man by the name of Mike Becker allowed Randall
to examine the one he was selling and Randall
figured out how to make them and how they worked.
He started making his own from that day on.

There are many Flute players that Randall admires
some of which are: Richard Fool Bull,
Bill Black Lance Jr., Belo Kozad, Doc Tate Nevequaya,
Sonny Nevequaya, Kevin Locke, Joseph Fire Crow,
Robert Tree Cody, Dan Red Buffalo and Duncan Grady.
In Randall's own words "There are so many people who
made a major dent in keeping the flute alive
if it weren't for them the flute would be gone."

There are several Flute Makers that Randall admires
and they are as follows: Brian Akipa, Hawk Little John,
      Sonny Nevequaya, Dr. Richard Payne.

I asked Randall his definition of a personal flute
as opposed to a Ceremonial flute,
He told me "They can all be used in a sort of "Ceremony".
A Greek philosipher said "Music is prayer without words."
Randall's statement to that is "Indians lived it."
Where the line gets drawn is when you play for yourself
as opposed to playing for someone else in a prayer.
There is not a lot out there in the way of flute ceremony,
What is out there is kept pretty private
and the traditions are protected very well.

Randall is From the Black Mi'nqua Nation
      and is enrolled with the
AAIWV Appalachian American Indians of West Virginia.
It is a state recognized Inter Tribal Unit.
