HOT ROD CHROME SUSPENSION STEP-BY STEP
Here is my reference picture. I took it my self at a local rod meet last weekend and was keen to capture all that chrome in a painting. Plus, I like the challenge. To transfer the main reference lines to the masonite I first print the photo off at A4 and lay an A4 sheet of OHP film over it then trace out the main reference lines. I then reduce it at high quality on the photocopier then project it using my Artograph designer projector.
Here you can see the tyre all masked up with tape and painters drop sheet just prior to commencing spraying.
Here you can see the tyre worked up with a mix of Golden fluids Carbon black, Paynes grey and ultramarine blue using hand held sheilds as well loose masking cut from mylar held in place with magnets over a large white board The process I follow from here is a series of transparent layers then erase to get detail and fine tonal variations then more transparent layers until I am happy.
Airbrushes I use at this stage are the Iwata Eclipse HP-BCS and an HP-CS with a .5mm nozzle.
This is a detail shot of the fine texture I am able to achieve with some light touches of a normal Architects electric drafting eraser, purchased over ebay for 15 bucks. With the bigger eraser stick I can use the point to get very fine high lights. If I use it flat, I can get very subtle tones. I usually go back and tint these areas with trasparent layers of paint.
Stay tuned for more
