Equinox is calm, mature and level-headed by nature. He knows what is expected of him and gets it done. He learns very fast, but he has enough brains to decide things for himself, and if he feels that we are doing things wrong, he will certainly let us know! Once he refused to do anything for one of our trainers, because the fellow very hard-handed and kept trying to force Equinox into doing things. But as soon as the guy dropped his whip and started asking gently instead of kicking his heels in, Equinox just went like a dream for him. Another time we had him in the bantam cart, but Equinox simply would not budge to pull it forward, no matter what we did. On closer investigation, we discovered that one of the cart shafts was cracked slighly, and had he started pulling it the shaft may have given way and created a serious accident for all involved!

Equinox has very fine, old purebred bloodlines. His sire is Heltondale Black Prince III, four time Supreme Champion of the Stallion Show. From his dam line there is the great Tebay Campbell ton Victor, considered by his breeder to be "the best foal he had bred". From these great bloodlines he has inherited a fantastic conformation, and three rock-solid yet elegent gaits. He has a very steady canter and smooth trot that belie his seemingly clumsy and bulky pony frame. His form and stance over the jumps is great too; you won't believe this heavy looking pony could jump so well! He can do 4'0 fences with ease, which just shows how strong his legs and hooves are. But all who know Equinox will agree that it is his character and temperament that truly make him stand out, rather than his lineage or his showiness. He is very fatherly and gentle with the inexperienced riders (or those he considers to be inexperienced!), yet knows how to get down to business when its time to show or to learn new moves. He is certainly one of our best-loved and most-admired equines, and we look forward to many more happy years ahead with Equinox.
