Basic Facts of the Case
The evening of 5 June 1996, Darin Routier (27)  and baby Drake went upstairs to bed.  Darlie (26) and the couple's other two sons, Devon (age 6) and Damon (age 5), slept in front of the TV in the main floor den.  Hours later, Darlie called 911 to report an attack on the two boys by unknown intruder(s). Darlie alleges she observed one or more intruders flee the house through the kitchen and utility room into the garage, having dropped a knife onto the utilty room floor.  She says she chased the man, picked up the knife, then went back to the kids.  She further states that she screamed, waking her husband.  Darin immediately came down the stairs either nude or wearing his jeans and glasses.  She then called 911 while Darin performed first aid to the dying boys.

The police and paramedics arrived within moments.  Devon was dead on the scene as a result of multiple stab wounds to his chest.  Damon was transported to the hospital but died enroute of similar wounds.  Darlie was treated and transported to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery to clean, observe, and close the 9 inch slice to her neck and lesser stab wounds to her arm and shoulder.

These are the initial facts of this case, and, generally, these are not in dispute.

The disputed facts, or more accurately, the interpretion of those facts, are many.  Questions ranging from whether Darlie was a light or heavy sleeper to her behavior at a posthumous birthday party for Devon have caused this case to take on a life of its own.
