Updates
This is what's been going on at Starlight Hamstery.
June 2008

There are no pups available at this time.

February 20 2008

Finally we have a litter. Six pups - if you are interested email me because these may go fast.

January 2008

Breeding has resumed. Hopefully you'll see some litters soon.

November 30 2007

Sadly, Teagan, my only pregnant female, passed away, so now I won't have any pups available for Christmas. Check back in January and hopefully I will have litters by then. I'll try to keep this space updates with announcements and possible pregnancies over the hectic holidays.

November 18 2007

Sadly, I have been very unlucky with breeding hamsters this winter. Two hamsters bred and neither of them ended up having pups. I was only successful in getting one more hamster to breed - Teagan to Licorice - and her pups, if she has any, should be due around November 24th and ready to go four weeks later on December 22nd. Last year I had no problems breeding or getting pregnancies to "take" - I don't know what is the problem. :( I will update once I know if Teagan is having her pups or not.

October 21 2007

Well there are no litters currently; that's why there haven't been any updates. I should start breeding soon for Christmastime. I'm planning to have the first hamsters for Christmas ready to go by early December.

October 2 2007

Sorry about the lack of updates; I've been out of town. Two litters will be ready to go soon. See the pups page for new pics and hopefully I'll have more info up this week.

September 9 2007

Updated the pups page again since I'm getting a lot of requests to do so!

September 4 2007

Finally got pups page updated. Sorry about the wait - I have been so busy lately.

August 22 2007

Updated pups page. A lot of litters right now ... I'm breeding Kailey to Licorice, and I think I'll start breeding Shasta, too.

August 14 2007

Updating pups page. I've been breeding Ariel, Teagan and Holly so hopefully we'll have more pups by the end of this week.

August 7 2007

Updated pups page. Lindsey only had four pups this time. Last time she had only three. That's really unusual for her to have so few. It's discouraging since there's a lot of interest in that litter. However, it looks like Christie carries black, and I think I may keep one of those pups instead. We'll see.

July 31 2007

Updating pups page - finally!

July 20 2007

Updated pups page.

July 16 2007

Just a quick update - got the pups page updated. I will update it again soon for everyone who's been asking! ;) Breeding My cream satin female to Licorice to test them both. I'll try to get the breeders page updated, too.

June 19 2007

Updated the
breeders page - that was long overdue. Also have the new pups up on the pups page.

June 3 2007

Updated pups page really quick - I promised I would! :)

May 31 2007

Updated the pups page - Ariel, Christie and Lindsey have litters. Lindsey only has three pups for some reason. I'm going to try to get Ariel and Christie's pics up on the Breeders page, too.

May 20 2007

Two new litters to mention - Ariel and Christie both have pups.

April 30 2007

Updated the pups page. So busy lately - but we're having some huge litters!

April 18 2007

Finally got the pups page updated for all of you who have been waiting!

April 10 2007

Just been so busy lately! Three new litters on the
pups page. If you want one of Chloe's, reserve now. Expecting another litter tomorrow.

Pizzazz died Saturday. How sad! She was a great hamster. :(

Tuesday March 6 2007

Updated pups page. Two new litters!

Wednesday February 18 2007

Pups page is updated. Breeding a few more hammies.

Thursday January 18 2006

My computer has been acting up so it's been hard for me to update the website. I'm breeding but since it's winter it's been difficult to get the pregnancies to take. Keep looking at the pups page and I'll update when I get a litter.

Tuesday December 5 2006

Updated the pups page ... hope I got all the info right - it was kind of a rush job. I am so tired, but I promised I'd get it done!

Sunday November 26 2006

Quick update of the pups page and that's all I have time for !!

Sunday November 19 2006

Updated pups page. Finally was able to get pics of Chloe's and Brigitte's litters. I am breeding other hammies but the litters currenty on the pups page will be the only ones ready before Christmas. I have a lot of customers this year so keep your eye out for updates, as it is first come first served.

Friday November 10 2006

Milky Way's pups are weaned - it was a bit of a rush, so hopefully I got the sexes and coat lengths right. I forgot that there are shorthairs in there; I'm so used to working with longhairs exclusively I think I told people they would all be longhairs. Oops! See
pups page for updated pics. Also Chloe should have pups any time now.

Tuesday November 7 2006

Updated pups page. Hopefully I'll wean and sex Milky Way's pups soon, and get better pics of each up.

Saturday November 4 2006

New pics of Tiger Lily's and Milky Way's litters on the pups page. Breeding lots of females - Chloe, Dierdre, Brigitte, Lindsay, and Isabella should be having pups this month. Claire still isn't interested in breeding, for some reason.

Tuesday October 31 2006

Happy Halloween! Tiger Lily had pups Sunday afternoon - pups page is updated, even though they are just tiny little pink things. Make sure you read this info on wet tail if you are thinking of purchasing a hamster (from me or anywhere). It's just my experience with the illness.

Sunday October 29 2006

Tiger Lily had
pups this afternoon! I updated new pics of Milky Way's pups, too. Don't know who we're keeping yet.

Wednesday October 25 2006

Milky Way looks like she may carry black and possibly is a tort. We may have black eyed honeys in there. Since Rory doesn't carry cream that would explain the light colored pups. Isabella is breeding with Eli - hoping to have some gorgeous cream and ivory satins.

Wednesday October 18 2006

Milky Way had pups! Currently I'm breeding Tiger Lily, and soon I'll be breeding most of the other girls, too.

Wednesday October 11 2006

Finally got the breeders page updated. Milky Way has rejected Rory's advances the last couple tries, so hopefully that means she's pregnant. I'm working on my colors page - hope to have the basic pics of most colors and patterns up soon!

Thursday October 5 2006

I'm currently breeding Milky Way ... hopefully she will take with Rory. I also have many females that should be ready to breed in time to have Christmas pups, so there will be lots of pups for the holidays.

Thursday September 12 2006

Tiger Lily had pups! Check out the pups page. There are thirteen in all ... I may keep one or two, I haven't decided. It depends on what colors we get!

Friday August 18 2006

Breeding has begun for our next litters. We're mating Amber and Butterscotch as well as Tiger Lily and Macaroon. I'm super busy, as usual, but I'm trying to find time to update the site by changing around some of the pages. I know this site needs a major overhaul - I just don't know when I'm going to have the time to do that! I should be changing the links on the front page shortly. I'll be adding the updates link to there, and adding an awards page. Hopefully I can get that done today.

Wednesday August 9 2006

Milky Way's pups are ready to go. See pups page for pics and details.

Sunday July 9 2006

Congrats to Milky Way! We finally have a new litter! Please let me know as soon as possible if you're interested in getting a pup from this litter. Some people have been waiting for awhile so they may go quickly.

Monday June 12 2006

We should be breeding a couple pairs of hammies shortly. Planning matches between Reese and Milky Way as well as Macaroon and Amber. I think Tiger Lily, too, but I haven't decided who to pair her with. We'll see if I have the time. Keep an eye on the pups page for litters, and here for more updates.

Tuesday April 25 06

Hamsters all look healthy! However, I am going to take some time off from the hamstery this summer for personal reasons. I may breed a litter or two, so keep your eye on the pups page if you're interested in a hamster, but otherwise it will probably be close to fall before I start breeding regularly again. I hope everyone's hammies are doing well!

Saturday March 18 06

Everybody is still healthy and doing well - no sign of wet tail, but sadly we lost Cotton on St Patrick's Day. He was such a great hamster and we are so sad. A couple litters should be coming up soon ... I do have an experimental color litter as well. I may post some pups from that soon.

Wednesday March 1 06

Updated the pups page - expecting a few new litters this week. Everyone seems healthy and well!

Tuesday February 21 06

Butterscotch is looking great! Only lingering effect from his illness seems to be a slightly smaller size, but then again, rexes are often smaller than their fellow hamsters. His coat has grown back in a he's looking very pretty.

Hailey's litter was kept until six weeks - and no wet tail cropped up. Yay! They are gone, but I am posting Starrie's new litter on the pups page. I have a few people already waiting so those pups may go fast.

I'm still quite concerned about the possiblity of wet tail. It's so frightening that I still have no idea where this came from and if it could strike again. But I will try offering pups again. Thanks so much for all the emails and support! It really means a lot to me.

I do have a lot of things happening over the summer as many of you already know! So I don't know how much breeding I'll be doing this summer, but I don't have any plans to quit running the hamstery. So if I don't have a lot of litters don't be surprised.

So the
pups page is updated. A couple of other hamsters are expecting as well. So if Starrie's pups get reserved quickly, there are more litters still coming!

Friday, February 3 2006

Well, Butterscotch recovered, but not without a few battle scars. He pulled out some of his fur near his rump - the satin rexes often have fur that tangles badly, and combined with the wet tail he probably had some issues cleaning himself properly. Unfortunately, too, he hated the vet medication. He would actually leave his mouth open and plow though the shavings with his face after each treatment, so I worried that he got enough of the meds. He did recover, as I said, but he lost weight and now is still very small for his age. I hope he catches up. He seems healthy and very active.

No new cases have come up. I do have one litter, Hailey's, which are eight pups born on January 7. This litter will be kept until they are at least six weeks old, and then maybe I will put them on the site if they remain healthy. This litter will test to make sure the illness is not somehow lingering in my house.

As I still do not know where the wet tail came from, I am worried about future outbreaks. Should I close the hamstery to prospective clients? I just don't know what I'm going to do. It's just so contagious and so dangerous.

Anyways I'm trying to update the
breeders, memory and pups page today. Wish me luck!

Thursday January 12 2006

The good news is that the pups, except, sadly, for Cashmere, have completely recovered and are looking great. The bad news is, another pup in another cage has developed symptoms - a male mink satin rex from Jackie's litter. I hope to keep him and have named him Butterscotch. He is on medicine and still kicking after two days of illness, so keep your fingers crossed. The three other males in his cage remain unaffected as of this morning. I am not treating those males with the vet antibiotic, but they are getting the electrolyte treatment. Currently that is our only case, so I am cautiously hopeful. All our hamsters being carefully monitored for symptoms.

Tuesday January 10 2006

I'm heartbroken to say that Starlight Hamstery will be closed for awhile due to a mysterious outbreak of wet tail. This illness is very contagious and evidently is also affecting many pet stores in the area so please, wash carefully if you have a hamster at home after visiting a pet store! I avoid visiting pet stores for this very reason, so where the illness came from I have no idea! But that's what makes it so frightening. We've tangled with this illness before, and here's some of the things we've discovered about this sickness (these are just our first hand observations, and by no means a scientific study, but maybe this information will be helpful to some of you):

1 - Symptoms include a bad smell, a lethargic and dirty animal, and a wet bottom and underside. The loose bowels are often noticeable and greenish in color. When these symptoms begin to subside, the animal is usually on the road to recovery.

2 - If you notice these symptoms - get to a vet ASAP! Time is important - a hamster can die quickly from dehydration. The vet can provide you with an antibiotic to give your hamster twice a day, usually with an eyedropper. My friend and I also swear by a formula you can purchase at PetSmart - it's called Wet-Tail Plus Antibiotic Fizz-Tablets, and it's made by Oasis. You add the tablets to their drinking water and it provides them with probiotics, vitamins and electrolytes. My sick hamsters began showing improvement in just a couple days with the veternarian's treatment
in addition to the treated water.

3 - Hamsters are small animals, and the rapid loss of nutrients and liquids from diarrhea can quickly lead to death. So if your animal is sick and not drinking, bring the bottle to him and try to encourage him to drink. Make sure he has plenty of uncontaminated food, and tempt him with nutritious treats such as carrots, which are also loaded with water to keep him hydrated. Be careful to keep him calm when administering treatments - some hamsters fight the eyedropper, or find taking the medicine upsetting. We all know what hamsters do when they're upset, right? They poop - which, when a hamster already is losing precious liquids and nutrients, is a dangerous thing.

4 - Once one of my hamsters had gotten wet tail and recovered, they haven't gotten it again. This is strictly my observation among my pets. And the hamsters that I still have that were exposed to wet tail the last time I was stricken with it but never came down with it, also remained well this time. Some hamsters do not seem to be affected at all - Pizzazz's entire litter of ten was very ill except for one male, Macaroon, who never got sick. Why? He slept right in a pile with his sick siblings. Maybe he has a stronger immune system? Perhaps observations like this can lead to stronger, more disease resistant litters. On the other hand, so far we've only lost one pup - a female, Cashmere, who, while on the small side, was not the smallest nor sickest pup. Why did she succumb? Cokie's entire litter, despite being right next to a sick cage of pups, is still unaffected since five days of exposure. It's interesting to note that Cokie had suffered from wet tail in the past and completely recovered - is it possible she may have somehow passed antibodies to her children?

Of course, these are my observations since discovering wet tail in two pups cages five days ago. I will post any changes on this updates page as they become known, but most of the pups seem to be recovering. Only a couple still look dirty and and damp, most look nice and dry and healthy. Still they will all get the full treatment, including Macaroon, since he is still in the cage with his siblings. Wish us luck!

Tuesday December 27 2005

Updated the pups page the second day in a row. Gemma's pups were weaned (Cokie's as well) and now individual pics are up. Hamsters are going fast!!

Monday December 26 2005

Wow, what a busy Christmas. If I made any mistakes updating the pups page today, I apologize. I'm exhausted! :)

Thursday December 22 2005

Really getting busy with Christmas coming, but don't let that stop you from emailing! :) Updating the pups page today.

Monday December 19 2005

Updated pups page. I should be weaning Jackie's pups tonight or tomorrow, and plan to bring them into our family room so they can get plenty of attention. Gemma's litter colors just starting to come in - think I can see a couple creams and a couple whites.

Thursday December 15 2005

Putting individual pics up of Jackie's litter since I have so many people wanting pups. Not sure of sexes yet - I can get better pics and more info once they're weaned at three weeks. Pizzazz and Gemma refused to leave the nest for me today. But I think Pizzazz and Gemma have around ten pups each and Cokie has six. The other three litters are going to have some pretty pups - bandeds and satins and torts of different colors - so if you wait the extra week for one of their pups I promise you will not be disappointed. By the way, I changed my mind about the sable - it is available now. Also wanted to mention that the dove pup does have red eyes if that bothers anyone. You can look up the colors on my colors page if you want more info and to see adults of that color - a hamster's full color really doesn't come in until four months or so.

Tuesday December 13 2005

Updated the pups page. Jackie has eight pups, and at two weeks they're really getting around the cage. They were fighting over their Raisin Bran treat today - poor Jackie had her paws full, as you can see on the index page. The minks and sable from her litter I may be holding onto for my breeding program, but it's likely I'll only end up keeping one or two of the three. The goldens, black and what I believe to be a dove are available. Really looks like a couple of the pups are rex, too. Don't know sexes yet but depending on Jackie's reaction I may try to handle the pups a little now that they're two weeks. I wean them at three and then I can handle them often. Gemma refused to leave the nest but she did stretch towards the raisins in her food dish enough for a partial pic of her pups. Cokie's are still a little young to tell colors, and Pizzazz doesn't seem to carry cream with all the dark pups she has, but you never know. If she carries cream only a quarter of the litter should be cream, anyways, and you know how that works. I like how Pizzazz's one pup has his mouth open in the shot. How cute. And can you tell that Cokie's little pale colored pup has an entire piece of cereal in his mouth?

Friday December 9 2005

Wow, it's so hard to keep up with the site during the holiday season! There are now four litters on the pups page!

Saturday December 3 2005

Put up new pics of Jackie's pups on the pups page. I keep noticing (when I check in on the hammies midday) that RC has the strange habit of always being wide awake and running around in the middle of the afternoon! I don't know why that is but he always seems so happy to see me. How cute.

Wednesday November 30 2005

Yay, pups! It looks like Jackie has around eight but being a good first time mommy she rarely leaves the nest. Plus I don't like to bother new mommies. Expecting everything from blacks to sables and minks. There shouldn't be any tortoiseshells, unless Jackie is playing a trick on me. In case anyone wondered, the cream satin female that was on the pups page is now spoken for.

In other news, we lost Mackenzie yesterday (sob!) She was almost two so it's no surprise but she was such a cool hamster. Besides that, (since we're still trying to reorganize the hamsters in their new location), we had about four cages temporarily in other bedroom. A sleeve of one of my turtlenecks fell into Gisselle's cage. She didn't try to escape, but apparently thought it would make good nesting material. Sigh. Oh well, my fault.

Tuesday November 22 2005

No pups yet although we've had several matings. I will be offering a few young hamsters on the pups page - in fact, I already put a cream satin female up today. I am just so busy lately that I don't have the time to keep all the hamsters I'd like to, so I have to offer some of the pups I held back. I should be adding a couple more soon. Check it out here.

Thursday November 17 2005

Breeding hamsters ... they've moved to a new room in the house - they're still adusting, so breeding is slow. Winter also slows breeding ... sigh. But I'm working on it! I think Starrie and Jackie especially have a good chance at having some pups coming up.

Wednesday September 14 2005

Updating pups page ... putting individual pictures of Gemma's pups up since that litter is so popular!

Wednesday September 7 2005

Updated the pups page. Having a really busy week. Anastasia did have pups - Misty did, too, but unfortunately lost the whole litter.

Tuesday August 30 2005

Updated the pups page. I put it off because I expected Misty, who's quite large, to have pups yesterday - she didn't. I'll have to keep an eye on her. Also Anastasia is due today, but I see no pups yet. I hate to update the page when things are pending like this - I may have to update it again! ;)

Wednesday August 24 2005

Gemma and Pepsi had pups today! I put their pics on the pups page, but you can't see any pups yet. First time moms can be tricky and I don't want them to feel any stress. Last chance if you want a hamster from Lisette's or Bree's litters. They're leaving soon.

Tuesday August 23 2005

Updated some of the site - put a new pic of Cameron's pups on the pups page, added Jenna to the breeders page, updated a few pictures - feel free to let me know if you see any broken images. Nobody wants to breed lately ... I wonder if it's the cooler weather we're having. Gemma's due tomorrow - I can't wait!

Friday August 19 2005

Updating
pups page - they're getting weaned today! We had a surprise, but a nice one. A couple of Bree's black pups are rexes! I expected her to be split for rex, but not daddy. Cameron had pups yesterday (her final litter), and Gemma (yay!) did not. Hopefully Gemma will have pups with Cotton on the 24th. Misty and Anastasia are due towards the end of the month.

Tuesday August 16 2005

Updated the pups page - almost time to wean the pups! Working a lot on breeding lately - should have a few more litters coming up soon. Put a pretty pic of Gloria on the front page - she's just such a big and beautiful hamster.

Friday August 12 2005

Updating pups pics real quick. Was expecting Miranda to have pups but she didn't.

Tuesday August 9 2005

Sigh ... no creams or cinnamon combos in Lisette's litter. Too bad. But they are beautiful pups. I can tell she has eleven, but not sure how many Bree has - although her pups are pretty, too. I'm hoping for a satin female umbrous golden out of there. See the latest pics on the pups page.

Finally got Gemma to breed last night - yay! I can't wait for her first litter! She's so huge already that I'm betting she'll be as big as her grandma
Gloria someday.

Thursday August 4 2005

Just enough time today to update the pups page. Later!

Sunday July 31 2005

Sadly Pirouette lost her litter - but Bree had a litter the same day! Gemma did not have pups. I did manage to get pics of Bree and Lisette's litters - see the pups page.

Wednesday July 27 2005

Two new litters were born - Pirouette's and Lisette's! Pier looks like she's got around nine pups. Lisette probably has around ten. Both seem a little nervous so I'm giving them lots of space. You can click on their names on the
pups page to see what we expect from their litters. Maybe I should name their pups with stormy names - we had such a violent storm last night! Last chance if you're interested in one of Glitters'; they may go this weekend. Also I am adding Two new females to the breeders page: Bree and Alicia. Not sure if Gemma's going to have pups today or not. We'll have to wait and see.

Saturday, July 23 2005

Updated quite a bit today. Added new pics of Glitter's pups to the Pups page, added a personal page for one of my favorite hamsters, Gemma, and added Gloria to the retirees page - also linked the retirees names to their personal pages. I updated the breeders page, too - added some new hams. Still need to work on their personal pages, though so the links are probably wrong.

Tuesday July 19 2005

Have a lot of litters coming up soon. Even if I don't update often this summer it doesn't mean I don't have pups available. Email if you'd like info - I usually have at least one litter even if it's not up on the site.

Monday May 30 2005

Going to try to update the breeders page today. Gisselle should hopefully have her pups tomorrow. Happy Memorial Day, everyone.

Thursday May 26 2005

I apologize for not updating the site in over a month! Unfortunately, I have many commitments right now that are taking up a lot of my time, and the website ends up suffering. I will definitely try harder to update more frequently in the coming summer months. The hamsters are all doing fine, don't worry.

Wednesday March 30 2005

Today I updated the hamsters' personal pages and added some new ones.
Tyler's is updated; so is Anastasia's. I added Misty, Cotton, Maverick and Cameron's pages. You can get to most of the breeders indiviual pages by clicking on their names on the Breeders Page. I still have a few more to do, I know.

We've been saddened lately by a few deaths -
Stud Muffin (sob!), Destiny, Gabrielle and Corey have left us. Stud, Des and Corey were all way over two years and while we were terribly sad it wasn't unexpected. However, Gabrielle was rather a shock. She was only a year and a half, and hadn't been showing signs of old age. Maybe it's because I had to take her from her mom and hand raise her when she was ten days old.

Stud and Gabrielle were wonderful hamsters - Stud was everyone's favorite. They were our champion
Gloria's parents and produced many other fine offspring. Gabrielle's size was amazing and Stud had the best personality around. Destiny and Corey were pets, not breeders, but even as pet store purchases they lived long happy lives with us. So many of our retired females and males are getting older and this was expected but it still hurts. I need a little time before I start updating the Memorial Page.

Friday, March 11 2005

Well, I've been working a lot on the "Colors and Pattern Pics" section of the site. Remember it's all under construction, and I'll be updating it as much as I can! I'll try to add the pictures that I think are the most basic and best example I have of that color or pattern, but if I don't have that I'll add in parantheses any additional information. Such as putting (Banded) after a picture of a cream banded hamster, when all I want to do is define "cream". I'll replace that with a solid cream hamster when I get the chance.

Wednesday, March 9 2005

I decided it would be a good idea to have an updates page to keep people informed about what we've been doing here and what we intend to do in the near future.

If I told you I'd put a picture on the site, or email you information and I've forgotten, please don't hesitate to email me and let me know! Sometimes I get sidetracked and forget.

I added a new section to the website today! I'm revamping the whole "
colors" page and I'll be tweaking it all the time til I'm happy with it. So feel free to point out any errors, but remember it's still in the working stage! I'll be added pics when I have the chance and fixing any problems I notice. If there's any color you'd like to see, email me and let me know. If I have a pic I'll add it!
