The Jefferson Starship Site Presents

Marty Balin & Slick Aguilar

On Tour April 1997

Wetlands, N.Y.C., NY, 4/16/97

By Dave Lerner

Acoustic Marty Balin and Slick Aguilar appeared at the Wetlands in NYC last night (4/16). It was a great show, lots of surprises.

I wasn't supposed to go but it was really nice outside, so I decided to go. I'm glad I did. Here's the setlist (29 songs!):

Feeling the Love Again, Let's Go, Turn Me Up, Irelands, Runaway, Atlanta, Today, Comin Back to Me, Summer of Love, Papa John, Count On Me, Going Back to Texas, Road Fever, There's Only One, Nothing to Lose, Never Too Late, Let it Live, No Limits, Maybe For You, Hearts, Ganja of Love, Ways of Love, Goddess, Gold, Later On, It's No Secret, Lay Lady Lay, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, Miracles.

I met Marty & Slick before the show and we went backstage and I saw the setlist. I asked permission and I copied the setlist before the show. I the Dylan song on the setlist, but I didn't see Dock in the Bay. There wasn't anyone in the club who weren't surprised by these two numbers. Marty sang Lay, Lady Lay in a low, deep Bob Dylany voice. It was really cool. Then, when he did the Otis Redding song, it was loudly received. Is there anyone in this world who doesn't know the words to this song?? The whistle ending had the whole crowd whistling. Wow.

From the rest of the show, Coming Back to Me sounded greater than ever, Summer of Love (from the JA 89 tour) was nice, Maybe for You rocked. Gold was requested by the audience and Marty didn't dissapoint us. We requested Caroline, but Marty claims Slick doesn't it.

Small crowd, maybe 100. Nice place to see a show. Very hippieish. I was the only one with the Fulton t-shirt. People stared. Marty's father asked me about it. He mentioned something about copywrite.

Marty is coming out with a new album in May. It was recorded in Nashville, and he may tour in the summer to promote it. This would conflict with the JS tour in July. And Slick may go with him too.

I *may* go tonight at Hoboken. I'm really tired. It was a pleasure for sure.

Small place, in the back of a resturant. Maybe 50 people paid to see the show. There were two opening acts. So, Marty & Slick didn't come on until 11:45 PM. By the time the show was half over, maybe 20 people were still there. The show ended at 1:45 AM. I'm beyond exhausted.

Setlist was nearly identical to the Wetlands show except for ONE REALLY BIG SURPRISE. CAROLINE !!!!

My friend George has been loudly requesting this song for the past 4 years and had been to all 5 Balin shows in this small tour. Perhaps, you heard sream "Caroline" on the Tramps tape? That was George.

Anyway, right after Gold, George yells again for Caroline. Marty looks at him and smiles. As he starts to play, we notice that Slick is a little lost. He really didn't know this song so well. It was incredible. The last time I heard that song performed was 1974 or 1975. Slick played the lead power chords and it felt like 1975 again. After they finished it, Slick goes up to the mike and says "OK George, you got what you wanted. We don't ever want to hear another request from you". I was laughing so hard at that remark, I nearly spilled my beer. George blushed and thanked the band.

Setlist: Feeling the Love Again, Let's Go, Turn Me Up, Ireland, Runaway, Atlanta Lady, Today, Coming Back to Me, Summer of Love, Papa John, Count On Me, Going Back to Texas, Road Fever, There's Only One, Nothing to Lose, Never to Late, Let It Live, Maybe For You, Hearts, Ganja, Ways of Love, Gold, Caroline, Goddess, It's No Secret, Miracles.

Before Marty's set, I met him in the resturant and he autographed a photo of him that I took from the wall of the club. It was one of those publicity photos from Mission Control. It had yesterday's date written on it and he asked me if I took it off the wall. I said yes. Then, he said "what if someone walks by the club, and didn't see his picture. Perhaps, they wouldn't come?" I said "Look, its raining outside, its cold, people just don't walk by a club in Hoboken to see what's up. This is Hudson County, the car theft capital of the world. People steal cars and photos off walls. In the spirit of the JA, I commanderred this photo". He bought that crap, signed it .

Marty stared at my Fulton shirt again and made some nice comments. However, I get the feeling that he or his people were upset over the picture on the front of the shirt. I think they feel ripped off or something.

I asked him about the Lay, Lady, Lay from the night before and he said he always wanted to sing that song and was glad he finally did it. Me too.

Anyway, no I didn't tape. Sorry. You had to be there. 20 people got to see Caroline. I was one of them. I'm typing this on 2 hours sleep. But it was worth the fatigue.
