Grace Slick Back in the Bay

Grace opens her debut visual art gallery at Bucky's Place in Tiburon. Read more in this press release from Cynthia Bowman Public relations:

LEGENDARY ROCK DIVA GRACE SLICK TAKES A BOW AS VISUAL ARTIST WITH EXHIBIT OF DRAWINGS AT BUCKY'S PLACE IN TIBURON, NOVEMBER 20

Meet the Artist at Showing of Mixed-Media Creations Including 'The Hard Rock Path" as well as Images of Jerry Garcia, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and More

SAN FRANCISCO -- Join rock 'n roll diva, best-selling author and artist Grace Slick for an afternoon of viewing and discussion as the pop-culture icon presents the first-ever "mini-gallery" of her mixed-media drawings on Saturday, November 20 at 2 p.m. at Bucky's Place (80 E. Main Street) in Tiburon.

Crystallizing her rock-royalty past and current inspirations into "elaborate cartoons for the child-adult," Slick has created images using lead, oil and chalk pencils, acrylic and watercolor paints, ink pen and sponge on assorted papers. The show features a four-piece, season-themed collection entitled "The Hard Rock Path," which includes the works "The Almost Secret Garden" (Spring), "Alice in California" (Summer), "Patricia and the Wolf" (Autumn) and "The Snow Queen" (Winter). Drawings of Jerry Garcia, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Ram Dass will also be presented, as well as images of animals.

Ranging in size from 7' x 10' to 20" x 26" to 7" x 10," Slick's original art, as well as a limited number of lithographs, are available for sale. A portion of the profits will go to various animal-rights and welfare organizations.

Slick's penchant for visual art began as a child, spending countless hours sketching and coloring her own creations. She began her formal studies in art history at the University of Miami in Florida, but was sidetracked when she moved to San Francisco and happened upon a burgeoning music scene which grew to rock the world with an influential display of innovative options in music, lifestyles and socio-political thought.

Slick's musical career took off from the zeitgeist of '60s San Francisco as the lead singer of The Great Society. She later joined the Jefferson Airplane (which was the first "San Francisco Sound" band to receive a major-label record deal), bringing to the band the songs "White Rabbit " and "Somebody to Love." The only group to perform at Woodstock, the Monterey Pop Festival and Altamont, Jefferson Airplane defined a distinct musical genre and reached soaring heights before calling it quits in the early '70s. Shortly thereafter, Paul Kantner and the outspoken Slick formed the second phase of their musical journey, Jefferson Starship, the success of which helped usher in the era of arena rock and garnered multiple platinum and gold records for the band. The '80s saw another shuffling of band personnel, a name change and even more commercial success as Kantner left the band, Jefferson Starship became Starship and Slick capped her singing career with numerous #1 hits.

After decades of rock 'n roll success and excess, Slick left Starship in the late '80s to pursue a cause of a more personal and passionate nature to her: animal rights and welfare. Slick continues to make great efforts on behalf of animal welfare, and recently authored her best-selling memoir, SOMEBODY TO LOVE?" (Warner Books).

Inspired by her skyrocketing music career, the characters she has met along the way and the animals she feels so strongly for, Slick revisited her first love, the creation of visual art, two years ago. Pursuing her drawing "for my own amusement," as she says, Slick resides in Malibu, California.
