Who hasn't heard of the so-called pro anorexia movement, especially those with eating disorders. This topic has been on television news, newspapers, etc. The use of this in the media is clearly to show the dangers these websites (containing weight loss tips, photos of emaciated women, and all together support in starving oneself) have on our youth in promoting eating disorders as the "in" thing. But does this really work? I mean in a sense I think these warnings actually perk the curiousity to go check out these sights, especially when they explain how simple it is to stumble upon them. I myself must admit that I'm a very curious person.
Yes, I have viewed some of these sites from time to time. I now see them as naive and rather depressing, but at one point (as bad as this might sound)I was very envious of those on these sights whom were "thinner" than I. I do believe people have the right to speak there minds, but I do think a line should be drawn somewhere. Suicide is illegal, so why then is it alright to have these sites that promote a slow suicide? Though it may not be a conscious decision, that's ultimately what an eating disorders does, kills. And the naive people behind these sights literally make me want to cry. Why on earth would anyone choose to live in a hell where images of food and numbers take over their lives? They claim "anorexia is a lifestyle, not a disease." Oh come on! What kind of life is dedicated to starving? What does it take for people to see just how ludicrous pro ana sights are? Maybe when they're stuck in the hospital, forced to gain weight, and want out of their ED they'll realize how foolish their thinking was. |
