Krycek hurried Scully through the halls, intent on getting away from
the violence behind them. He could hear the echoes of Mulder, Skinner,
and other agents yelling at each other. They had to get out of there
quickly. A pregnant woman was no good in a firefight.

"Slow down," Scully panted. She clutched her abdomen as she practiced
her lamaz breathing.

"We can't." Krycek didn't pause to address her concerns or check to see
if she was all right. He just needed to get her out of there as quickly
as possible.

A few more quick turns, Krycek half carrying, half dragging Scully with
him, they reached the safety of his car. He barely bothered to open the
door and shove her into the back seat before he was opening the
driver's door and jumping inside.

Billy Miles wasn't the only one after the baby. The whole ally way
lighted up, the pounding of feet trying to intercept them.

Without second though, Krycek jammed the car in reverse and speed out
of the ally way moments before containment-suited people flooded the
area.

From the back seat, Scully squeaked and complained about his driving,
telling him to slow down so they wouldn't get into a wreak and to let
her get her seatbelt on. Krycek was ready to bang his head against the
dashboard at her stupidity, that was until the gunshots through the
back window shut her up effectively.

One hand on the wheel, another with gun in hand, he speed through the
night streets of Washington, D.C. around cars in his way, trying to
shake off their tail.

He needed to create quick distance between him and the warehouse and
the tail. With quick reflexes, he speeded onto an on ramp to the high
way. He smiled gleefully as he spun the car in a quick 180 and started
dodging the cars now speeding *at* him.

"Are you *FUCKING* insane!" Scully yelled in the back seat.

"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing," Krycek said as he spied what he
was looking for. With a quick flick of his wrist, sending Scully
rolling into the side of the car as well, he careened over 3 lanes of
traffic and straight through the narrow gap between K-rails that
divided the two sides of the highway.

The following cars were unable to duplicate his quick maneuver and
continued to race on the wrong side of the high way.

Seemingly without a care, Krycek slowed down and took the next highway
exit. He stopped on the off ramp for a moment before speeding up again
and getting back onto the same highway. His ruse apparently worked
because all Black Ford Taurus’s disappeared on this side and the other
side of the highway.

"What the hell do you think you're doing!" Scully screamed right in his
ear. He could tell the red-haired bitch wanted to strangle him, but
considering they were speeding down the highway at 80 MPH with him at
the wheel, of course there was no choice. "I'm nine months pregnant
here!"

Krycek didn't respond to the jab. He was to deliver Oh-Holy-Saint-
Scully to Agent Reyes and keep the aliens at bay. It was an easy job,
except these two always had to complicate things.

"Didn't you hear me, you could have hurt the baby."

In the rear view mirror he could see Scully curl protectively around
her stomach. She sounded like she was close to tears and didn't want to
admit it.

"I don't have to worry about the baby."

"What?" Her voice a whisper and closer to tears then before.

"The baby is dead. It will come from your body and will be turned over
to the dead."

"No..."

It would have been a mercy to have cut that baby out of her month ago.
It was a mercy now to tell her now. But it was hard. Her tears flowed
freely now. She really wanted this baby.

"It was... it would have been born wrong."

"Huh?"

"The baby. It's wrong; part of it's missing. You would have given birth
to a shell, which would survive maybe a day or two and then it would
stop breathing." Krycek's too green eyes stared in the mirror at her.
"You were not meant to bring life into this world."

"Oh god, no," Scully's eyes were streaming with tears now.

The words of an apology stuck to his lips.

Krycek drew a careful bead on Mulder and fired. As if reading the
intention, Mulder ducked back, the bullet whizzing harmlessly by the
agent.

"Damnit, Mulder, stop moving."

"I could say the same to you, Krycek," Mulder yelled as he popped a
couple shots off in his direction. They thudded easily into the car he
was hiding behind.

"Alex Krycek, what the hell do you think you're doing?" Skinner's voice
boomed out of the darkness. Krycek turned to see Skinner behind a tree,
his position able for him to cover Krycek or to kill him. Considering
the gun was currently trained on him, it could likely wind up being the
latter.

A Scully scream ripped through the night, obviously behind Krycek a
ways.

"I'm trying to save Scully, what does it look like I'm doing." Krycek
shot off a volley against Mulder who retaliated with a couple shots of
his own.

"Likely story, bastard. Give up and die already," Mulder yelled.

"Walt, shoot Mulder. You have to kill him."

Skinner's gun wavered from Krycek to Mulder then back again.

"Shoot him!" Krycek screamed, "Shoot him or Scully's baby's dead."

Skinner's gun swung to pull a bead on Mulder.

"Don't listen to him," Mulder yelled, his gun never wavering from
Krycek's position. "He's trying to keep me from Scully."

The tortured screams were more incecent now. Agent Reyes could be heard
couching the distressed women through her labor.

"Shoot him or else you get a massive heart attack," Krycek's voice was
calm. In his hand he held up the black box that controlled Skinner's
life.

Skinner closed his eyes, seeing the horror on Mulder's face. His finger
tightened, suddenly, he swung his gun and fired.

Three shots rung out into the night.

And it was over. Mulder came out slowly from his cover, gun trained to
where Krycek was sprawled. His eyes swept quickly over the body before
moving on.

Skinner moved to view the body. Krycek lay sprawled with a surprised
look on his face. His eyes stared up sightlessly into the darkness.

"Goodnight, Alex," Skinner whispered silently as he knelt next to the
body. He leaned down and pressed light lips onto Krycek's cooling ones.

"Breath," Monica Reyes, in her ever-present annoyingness, panted and
set the rhythm for Scully's own breathing.

Scully screamed as another contraction worked her body in ripples. The
pain was excruciating.

"I think you're dilated right. You should probably push on the next
one."

"Speak for yourself, bitch." Scully really didn't want to push. Her
face flowed with sweat and tears.

"Whho, whho, hee," the other woman panted, the sound of her breathes
almost mesmeresmic.

Scully looked closely at Monica Reyes. She looked further away.
Everything was bright.

There was no pain.

And like stepping through a doorway, Scully found herself somewhere
else. It was quiet and peaceful. A man, at least it reminded her of a
man, stood a few feet away.

The man was all shiny and bright, like pure sunlight molded into a
shape. In his arms he held a baby's form. It was a hollow, translucent
shell that he cradled.

The man smiled and held the baby out towards her. Mutely she accepted
the gift.

She pulled the empty form to her body and looked to the man. She
understood that the baby was her's, that it was wrong and unfilled. How
could he be so cheerful over that?

The man thing continued to smile and raised his hand. He brushed it
gently over her cheek before putting his hand over the baby's heart.
There was a rushing, like robin wings, that filled the room and the
light of the man was gone.

A tiny part of light glimmered within the baby, growing brighter and
brighter. Scully smiled and listened to the baby's laughter.

"Come on, push," Monica's voice seemed disconnected with the world
Scully was in. It was almost like she was watching a movie on the
inside of her eyes. She could see herself sprawled, legs up with
Agent Reyes between them. There was no pain, only a cursory sense of
her body.

Scully pushed and could feel the gentle glide of something between her
legs. Another ripple came though her body and she pushed again,
listening to Reyes's loud cheering.

And another sound. The sound of a baby crying. Joy flooded through
Scully, barely able to withhold her glee. Her baby was all right, her
baby was born.

Reyes held up the squalling infant for mother to view.

"What color are his eyes?" Scully's voice was almost a whisper from her
screaming.

"They're blue, all babies eyes are blue when they're born," Agent Reyes
answered in surprise.

"Check them! What color are his eyes?"

Puzzled, Reyes looked into tiny eyes, noting the color. She shifted him
into the light to make sure she saw right.

"Green, they're green,"

Like a deflating balloon, Scully flopped back onto the bed. Reyes put
the baby into her arms, already intent on her task of tying off the
cord and delivering the afterbirth.

"Oh god, Scully."

She turned to see Mulder, a gun held loosely in his hands at his side.
He kneeled next to her and reverently stuck out a hand to touch the
squalling infant.

"Your baby, Scully, you have a baby."

Scully hurried down the hall listening to her 5 year olds horrific
screams. He was tangled on his bed, sheets wrapped around him; sweat
pouring off his small body. Like any mother, she wrapped her arms
around her child, cooing soft words of comfort. She listened as he
babbled on, strange words from his mouth.

Ideally, she looked to his bookcase, in full view of the bed. The
little red light was clearly on, glowing in the half darkness.

"It's ok, little Alex. You're safe now. Mommy has you."

She muttered on like that through most of the morning until he quieted
down into a fretful sleep. Once he was blissfully asleep, she snuck
over to the bookshelf and retrieved the video player. She took out its
storage chip and went to the phone in her bedroom.

Dialing a number, she contemplated the chip. Upon the second ring, she
could hear the phone pick up. "He's had another nightmare. I need to
talk to you," she said before handing up.

*****************

The story goes on with Marita coming to the house. Scully tells her
that she knows that it's not Russian or any other language the language
experts she's contacted could identify. Little Alex comes up to Marita;
like she's a beloved aunt and gives a picture he's drawn of the 4-
headed angel "mommy" saw. Next to it is a strange glyph, which he says
is Gabriel’s name. Marita takes the picture and the video chip to check
with her 'unusual' resources.

In the car, Marita reminisces about an odd glyph tattoo that her former
lover, Alex Krycek, used to have on his back between the shoulder
blades. It looks a bit like the glyph little Alex drew on his drawing.
