All-Star Racing Returns to Charlotte

By Robbie Mays

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series All-Star Race returns to the Lowe's Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 17th. This annual event held the week prior to the Coca-Cola 600 is open to race winners of the previous season and current season up to this point. Past NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champions are also eligible to compete as well as past winners of the race in the previous 10 years.

Drivers can also make their way into the million dollar spectacle by finishing first or second in the NASCAR Showdown, a last chance race held prior to the All-Star race, and the final way to get in is via a fan vote on nascar.com.

In the inaugural event in 1985, Darrell Waltrip drove his Budweiser Chevrolet to victory, only to have the engine blow seconds after taking the checkered flag. After a one-year trip to the Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1986, the Sprint All-Star Race has been held each May at the Lowe's Motor Speedway. The event was the first night race held on a major superspeedway in 1992.

The 2008 Sprint All-Star Race will be comprised of four 25 lap segments, with the winner of segment 4 claiming the $1 million prize.
