THE SONGS

To the best of my recollection,
every song STATIC CLING ever played out or recorded, going back to the original Chicago version of the band...kim

Let's start with the songs on our CDs.

"What A Life" is a straight re-issue of our first record, a 12" EP that was named 6th best record of 1986 by WEOS-FM in Geneva, NY. It contains:

1.
TERRIBLE BEAUTY (Erangey, Draheim) - This song was mostly written by Tony Erangey of the Chicago Static Cling but didn't really see the light of day until the New York band statrted up. I re-wrote and re-arranged it and it helped us win the WCMF Homegrown competition in 1986. This was Uncle Roger's favorite Static Cling song.

2.
COLD RAIN & SNOW (McGannahan Skjellyfetti) - Most Deadheads know this song in its much more laid back, longer form. We copped this 2-minute, punchier version from the first Dead album.

3.
THE MOMENT THAT NEVER COMES (Draheim?) - Believe it or not, the music for this started out as a bastardization of "Locomotive Breath" by Jethro Tull that some guy from Chicago who tried out for the band came up with. I re-arranged and re-wrote it and came up with the lyrics.

4.
LION'S DEN ( Draheim) - A song from my old solo repretoire.

5.
WITH TOMORROW (Gene Clark, Jesse Ed Davis) - Originally a very sparse acoustic song off of Gene Clark's mid-70's self-titled album.

"The Singles" CD compiles the A & B of both of our Jargon singles, the alternate take of "Terrible Beauty" done for the WCMF Homegrown VI LP and the Bob Jordan recording of his song, "Who Was That Stranger?" utilizing Static Cling as his backup band.

6.
TERRIBLE BEAUTY - The WCMF LP version.

7.
THE BRADY BUNCH (Draheim?) - Our big hit! This one was in heavy rotation on college radio stations in New York City and in punk clubs in Berlin, Germany. The original 7" vinyl is very rare! I copped the riff from "Fire of Love" off a Gun Club record and lyrically I married Marsha Brady off to Ed Gein and sent 'em to live in The Last House on the Left. Death metal band, Spater, covered this song.

8.
FIRE IN THE COCKPIT (Draheim) - B-side of "The Brady Bunch", it's a funk-rock workout.

9.
BATMAN (Neal Hefti) - Our second 7" (as The Grand High Potentates), it's The Caped Crusader done up loud, dirge-like and unhinged.

10.
PSYCHO (Jack Kittel) - Copped this morbid country classic off a Beasts of Bourbon LP. It's the B-side of "Batman".

11.
WHO WAS THAT STRANGER? (Bob Jordan) - Static Cling backs up legendary Boston folkie eccentric, Bob Jordan. Recorded in Bob's living room in one take. The tape recorder didn't really work right and at least one of us was drunk. I played lead guitar through a five dollar flea-market amp without knowing the key or the chords to the song. No wonder it came out great!

"Timbimboo" is a straight re-issue of our first full-length recording, previously available on cassette only. The songs are:

12.
INVOCATION (Draheim) - Me in the studio with bells, shakers, a de-tuned auto-harp and a plastic tube.

13.
ONE EYE BURNING (Draheim) - A personal favorite - Eric's opening bass line, good lyrics ("A flight of scarlet pigeons thunders through my brain"), the only lead I recorded with my hot pink Fender Flame before it was stolen...

14.
ONE EYE OPEN (Draheim) - Produced by Mic Fambro of Miche & the Anglos - he definitely got a little different sound out of us.

15.
FINAL SOLUTION (Draheim) - Inspired by a true crime story.
