| Stops along the way... FENGDU ("The Ghost City") |
| One of our stops along the river was the city of Fengdu. This city is called the Ghost City because of the temple on the hill that represents hell. We walked up the 700 steps to the temple, did a brief tour, and then went into the town to see what the local people were like. We were especially interested because this is a town that will not exist after the flooding in 2003. On the left, Sean stands beside a sign that reads 175m. These signs are everywhere to let people know where the water level will eventually rise to. This sign was about halfway up the hill that the temple is on. Therefore, the temple complex itself will not be damaged by the water...although it will be much easier to get to as the number of steps will be greatly reduced. The city itself is very interesting. Our first image of the people was as we exited the boat and we made our way through the locals selling various souvenirs, maps, and food. Then, as we were on the bus, we saw a man pulling a cart behind him with a pretty big screen TV tied to it. It was the perfect mix of old meets new and I doubt anyone will forget that image. The photos here are just of the local people doing there every day things...playing cards, going to work, taking care of the kids, sitting on the corner holding a snake... |
