For those adventureous types that want to check this area out on your own, here are some suggestions. Use a good four-wheel-drive vehicle, or an off-road motorcycle that is both street legal and registered & has a valid ORV sticker as well. Do not use a "quad" or a motorcycle without a registration because you can't use them here (you can only use them on designated trails...). A mountail bike won't work well here either becuase most of the trails have very deep & loose sand. You could hike in as well...if you are in good condition to do that- but you can't cover the required ground very quickly here. A quiet & capable vehicle is best- when you get close to an area that intrests you, then by all means do some hiking.
The trail roads that access the various range areas are not mantained for the casual use of a typical car. Sometimes the trails can get very rough. Bring as detailed of a map as possible (mapquest is ok., a county map good, a true military style & detailed contour map would be best), but also be prepared to discover that some of the trail roads do not end up where you would expect- also
draw in any trails that deviate from your map as you will need this info later. The best entry point to the range areas is the road along Military Road just north of 4 Mile Road that runs west directly to "Range 13" (it's marked clearly)- from the Range 13 area there are many trail roads that can be explored...just be careful, because this area is a working artillary & mortar range. So when you see a warning sign to stay out of an area- stay out for your own saftey!
If you are an 'outdoorsman', be aware that there is absolutley no hunting in this area. So you can't use that as an excuse for bringing your weapons here, so don't get caught with them- conservation officers also roam this area. You are at a disadvantage here, soldiers that train in these areas are likely quite well armed- and sometimes the training gets pretty intensive here during the summer. Just avoiding the area when "the guard is in town" would be the best thing to do- pick a quiet day to explore.
Also be aware that this area is also patrolled by a civilian contracted base security force when the MP's are not on duty. They are not restricted to just patrolling the post & doing gate duty. Be warned. I'm sure that you will be 'asked to leave' at the very least if you are found in a restricted area.
