Artificial Intelligence by Stephen Feeney

"AI" stands for "Artificial Intelligence" - the art of creating a living mind. Nobody has ever succeeded in building an AI. There are guesses, speculations, as to how to build an AI, and what an AI will be like once it's built, but that's all. The term "Artificial Intelligence" has been defined dozens of different ways, but we all know instinctively what is meant by real AI; it means an AI that is smart, that can understand things, that can talk with us intelligently, understand us at least as well as we understand it. A real AI may not be able to pass for human, and it may not think the same way humans do, but it will be, fundamentally, the equal of a human being.

There are many different theories of the definition of intelligence, some believe intelligence means being able to multiply 15 and 7 together in their head (105), others believe it's having the most knowledge, I believe intelligence isn't a measure of anything, intelligence is something we are naturally gifted when we are born. It's those that use this intelligence that are knowledgeable and smart.

Below are a few different definitions of AI from different sources ( unedited from original copy )

Herbert Simon: We call programs intelligent if they exhibit behaviours that would be regarded intelligent if they were exhibited by human beings.

Elaine Rich: AI is the study of techniques for solving exponentially hard problems in polynomial time by exploiting knowledge about the problem domain.

Elaine Rich and Kevin Knight: AI is the study of how to make computers do things at which, at the moment, people are better.

Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig: [AI] has to do with smart programs, so let's get on and write some.

Avron Barr and Edward Feigenbaum: Physicists ask what kind of place this universe is and seek to characterize its behaviour systematically. Biologists ask what it means for a physical system to be living. We in AI wonder what kind of information-processing system can ask such questions.

Claudson Bornstein: AI is the science of common sense.

Douglas Baker: AI is the attempt to make computers do what people think computers cannot do.

Astro Teller: AI is the attempt to make computers do what they do in the movies.

WRITING TASK

Due Date: 19 September 2002

Task:
Create a web site explaining your understanding of the Artificial Intelligence Topic.

The site should address issues such as a brief history of artificial intelligence, some goals of artificial intelligence, approaches to artificial intelligence, the Mind-Body problem, testing for intelligence, areas in which artificial intelligence is involved such as emulating human attributes, speech recognition, expert systems.

The site should also address the social and ethical issues related to artificial intelligence, such as the impact on employment of smart devices, assisting he disabled, medical expert systems, smart weapons, the impact of voice recognition, and speech synthesis.

The site should express your opinion on all the above aspects of artificial intelligence.

The web publication should be structured in such a way the reader can navigate in a logical way through the information presented. Each web page should not be too long and should not address too many concepts.

The web publication will be printed and handed in. Your site will be marked using the attached criteria sheet, which should be attached to the front of a printout of your site. The criteria sheet requires the location of the site, which should be a subdirectory of your home directory. The web publication must include links to sites from which information was obtained as well as citing any non-internet publications used.
