Damn the Turk!!! Enjoyed the game, thanks to all. |
I began this game anti-Russian, but it was soon evident that I needed to be anti-Italian, since I could keep Russia locked up north. The only problem with this was that Italy was gaining in Austria, and I wasn't really doing much. Thus, I had to make the hard decision to take Serbia from Austria (I'm sorry! That's the only move I felt bad about the whole game), which led to his fall a few years later. Yet, this was war, so I had to make sure that I kept up with Italy. After taking Tunis is '05, Italy and I sat in a stalemate in the Mediterranean, while I maneuvered around former Austria, going in and out of Venice a few times. I tried to signal to Russia that I wasn't attacking anymore, but unfortunately I couldn't signal any way that I hoped he would move against Germany, whom I rightfully saw to be the possible winner. All was going well, even with Russia, though, and I thought I might be able to make my way into the Med and hold off Germany there, thus forcing a 2-way eventually. But when France bounced me out of North Africa, I realized it would be inevitable that Germany would win, so I voted that way. So it's more like, Damn the French! :) |
The game got started very well with England attacking France just as France grabbed Munich. This sealed an England-Germany alliance which favoured me over England. While his fleets were deadlocked with France’s I drove deep into French territory and snagged Belgium. Thankfully Russia vacillated over Scandinavia, letting me grab Sweden. Then in 1906, England went for a double whammy – St Petersburg and Brest. It was a great move, but I couldn’t allow it for two reasons. Firstly it would have made England very hard to beat after France was defeated. Secondly it would have weakened Russia just when I wanted him to hold Turkey back. So I stabbed England, giving me two enemies, but a very good position. Much of my thinking from then on was put to making sure my position seemed less strong than it was – having two enemies helped, as did Turkey’s continuing success. Already I was thinking of the solo, and I was helped significantly by England and France retreating at crucial moments. Russia and Italy continued to concentrate solely on Turkey. I encouraged this by cutting a crucial Italian support in Tyrolia, which gave Turkey an extra centre for 10 centres to my 13. At the same time I launched a comprehensive assault on Russia, giving me the necessary centres for 18. France clearly gave up in the last year, which helped, but was probably not conclusive. Turkey had the foresight to move to help France but I had a good chance of getting an extra centre from Russia if I had been blocked from getting Portugal. Thanks for the game, everyone. There was a good level of tactical play and the main reason I won was down to a good performance by Alex as Turkey, providing a crucial distraction. My position was much simpler than the morass of the Balkan/Austrian battlefield, so I got rather lucky, I think. |
Congrats to Stephen! This was a game where I just never got going. No one to blame but me. |
I got the boot very early , so I don't remember much. I believe that I have attempted to start an A\I alliance , but since this is a gunboat it was a gamble that did not work out with Italy grabbing Trieste. I think at that point I started to work with Turkey against Italy , but as soon as I was gaining the upper hand against Italy and was won an extra SC, Turkey grab one of my own , so that was the end of my hopes , and I just sort of tried to survive as long as I could. All said and done , it was a good game to play and mostly observe. Stephen , congradulations , great victory , perhaps even the geatest I have ever witnessed. |
Great game, G. Nice psycho-strategic thinking in managing our perceptions. I for one was surprised at how quickly you came along in the last year or two. Not that I could have done anything much, had I noticed. This was the first game I started in almost 20 years; I played in-person only as a teenager. I was thus bummed to get Italy, as in my playing days it was often left 'neutral'. This may have been only my second go at it. Since starting this, I've started and finished several games on the judges and done a bunch of reading. All of which is my way of saying, 'sorry, Austria'! I learned my lesson and will probably never again stab A to begin the game. I spent much of the game trying to get some freedom from Turkey, and wishing R would see that it was possible to walk in through Armenia, but I guess that's no-press. |
