Okay, this is a little hazy, but thinking back I started this game off having to choose between helping England or France. I chose France because England simply would compromise in his demands to make the alliance work. I’d worked well with Tim before, and things went pretty smoothly at first, with us reducing England pretty quickly. At some stage, I think I moved on Russia, which might well have worked, but then I realised I far too exposed to France and on a hiding to nothing against Russia. Chris took over Russia and I knew he was very capable, so my advantage against Karl was gone. I moved back into a defensive position. Of course, in doing so, Tim was convinced I was moving against him, even though I couldn’t possibly hope to make any headway. He already had the advantage on me, and he pressed it, pushing me back. The only thing that got me out of jail was Italy’s success. He soon became dominant and isolated several centres behind his lines. I was able to convince Russia and France that Italy was the only one with a solo chance and that we needed to build stalemate lines quickly. Everyone was flagging in interest by this stage, but we managed to summon the energy to put a plan into action that would get us without fail into a stalemate position. Possibly Mark realised this, or he just didn’t have the energy himself. Never mind, the game never got going for me, but I guess the Milan variant did help Italy, since Mark dominated. Well done Mark and thanks all for playing and Mike for GM’ing. |
