Just for background, this was a gunboat game started a long long time ago which stalled when Joe got busy. I grew reasonably quickly as Brazil to start with, but my chances were up when Colombia steamed right at me from the off, in the same way as Chile’s chances were up when Argentina did the same to him. I spent a while fighting both off while their own rivalry slowed down their advance against me. In the end I was left hoping to be holding a crucial centre/2 centres at the end that would mean one of the two major powers would be forced to support me. Fortunately everyone went awol and the game ended in a DIAS, which I scarcely deserved. Thoughts on the variant? The different challenges faced by each power are interesting, but the map isn’t well-balanced enough. It’s very easy for Colombia-Brazil, Argentina-Chile fights to start up right from the off, rather like Italy-Austria in Standard. Perhaps if there were more opening theory available, people would resist the temptation in the same way as Italy attacking Austria isn’t so common any more. But the 4-player set-up didn’t feel quite right. Still, it was an interesting tactical experience trying to defend the incredibly porous Brazilian homeland. |
