Dip 919 – Alpha

A Solo victory for Turkey

This was a playtest of the Alpha Variant, in which a designated unit can change normal supply centres to home supply centres.

Final Map – Fall 1909

Back to Diplomacy index

Rules:

1. The map and unit positions at the start of the game are as normal, except that any of the home supply centres (HSC’s) can be ‘deactivated’, becoming a normal SC, while any SC can become an HSC if ‘activated’.

2. Each player will identify one of his original starting pieces as an ‘Alpha’ unit. This identification is submitted in the first season's orders.

3. At the end of a fall season, if the Alpha unit is occupying a neutral or foreign SC, it takes control of the SC as usual. However, at the end of winter, this SC will be activated as an HSC and one of the player’s old HSC’s must be deactivated.

4. During that winter, the player must identify which HSC will be deactivated. Builds may take place in any of the HSC’s, including the one to be deactivated, but not in the SC about to be activated. If no HSC is identified, the HSC is chosen alphabetically (but cannot be the newly created HSC). Builds, disbands and deactivations are all ordered simultaneously.

5. If an HSC is captured by an enemy Alpha Unit, then it is the HSC of both countries, but can only be built in by the country that controls it.

6. No new Alpha units can be built. If the Alpha unit is destroyed, then the player’s HSC’s remain the same till the end of the game.

My EOG

Arguments

This game has great potential, but the playtesting process drove all of the enthusiasm out of most of us fairly conclusively. I was recruited as a last minute replacement: I might not have taken it on, because I had been intending to avoid Libby’s games due to her strict house rules (of which more later). But she had put me forward and the game was interesting. The game got started. But the discussions and disputes never stopped. In the first few years it became clear that everyone had a different interpretation of the rules. The game became bogged down with discussion, much to the annoyance of some, who just wanted to play.

This taught me two things, as a potential variant designer myself. Firstly, never allow debate of rule changes during the playtest. Secondly, make sure everyone understands the rules beforehand. This means that unambiguous rules, preferably with examples, are a must. Complex situations have to be covered in sufficient detail. I have the same problems with the rather vague rules for a blind variant I GM called Stab!

My own play

With a simpler set of rules, we got going again, but the momentum had gone. I was actually doing pretty well by this point. My plan relied on hitting Italy with everything I had got as soon as Germany and England became entangled, then turning to face whoever emerged as the winner in the north. It was a high-risk strategy, but everything started off well. Italy got horribly bogged down against Austria, while Germany, England and Russia all got mixed up together, keeping the action well away from me. A desperate Russia had stabbed Austria, which was letting Turkey dominate the east, but I had a headstart on Italy and should have taken him out.

However, the delay of the game meant that the crucial stage of the game coincided with me starting at a new job. Perhaps those who haven’t gone through the process - changing hours, impressing the new bosses, adjusting to new pressures - think it’s an excuse. Anyway, I didn't have enough time to spend on orders and made two consecutive mistakes in orders that halted my progress. Turkey got the jump on me against Italy. Those two misorders made Turkey overwhelming favourite to win, whereas before Turkey and I would have met on a par and either made peace and waged war. It was a great disappointment to me and I believe altered the course of the game irrevocably.

House Rules

This is where I will incur Libby's wrath and reveal that I partly blame her strict line for this. Libby's requirement for prelims almost as soon as results had been published, punishable with instant replacement, was too draconian for me to manage. I was forced to think up and submit orders in minutes and then hadn’t the energy to think up proper ones. This is why I had avoided Libby’s games in the past. Another excuse, maybe, but I know others felt the pressure, as Christian demonstrated.

Libby’s hard line was demonstrated one final time in the final set of orders where she ruled my order F Mar s English F MAO – Spa illegal, presumeably because it didn’t specify a coast. That sort of exactitude, I think, ruins a game, and were it crucial, I would even quibble with the verdict. Still, I recognise that there are different ways of running a game, and the variety is one of the benefits of the Cat23 community. I knew the risks when I accepted the position.

Endgame ethics

It was clear to me that Turkey was going to win unless a stop-the-leader alliance was organised especially early. But the others wouldn’t listen to me, especially Russia. In the end I called a vote to give Turkey the solo purely to show how serious the issue was. I thought people might take it seriously after that, but Russia had thrown in his lot with Turkey, apparently to get some peace and quiet for a while.

England apparently saw the danger, but couldn’t resist launching one-centre stabs against me, successfully undermining the defence of the Med. His actions in the final season, grabbing a few centres to try and come second after Bill I considered as contrary to the spirit of Diplomacy as you can get. Second in a solo is nothing – the point of stopping when one player has more than half the centres is that, in time, that country would conquer all of Europe. So in fact going for second is just as absurd as you can get.

In the end, no one could be bothered. I couldn’t be bothered to try and organise the others; England NMR’ed and the new Italy, as experienced as I know Steph is, didn’t want major involvement. But most of all, Russia wasn’t interested in stopping the solo. I’ve come across people who couldn’t help holding a grudge before, but Hugh even held a grudge against me, purely because I couldn’t and wouldn’t attack Germany to help him out. This despite me being over-committed in the Mediterranean Sea. He undermined our vaguely co-ordinated efforts, all the while losing home centres to Turkey.

And that was the end. I suspect if there hadn’t been so many delays, people would have had enough energy to play this game properly. Bill played a solid game to win, but his win seemed to me to be down to being the only one who retained his concentration and his motivation. For which he deserves credit, while his performance in another game I’m involved in shows that there will be plenty more victories to come. I suggest that many of those will taste sweeter, though.

The Alpha Variant

I think the Alpha variant has potential. Bill certainly used it to his advantage in his solo, and I appreciated being able to build fleets in Spain and give myself the option of heading north or south. I’d still prefer the choice of whether to create a new home centre or just occupy the centre. The kinks seem to have been worked out of the rules though, so it should certainly see many more games happier than this.

GM’s EOG

As the GM and the creator of the Variant I will take full responsibility for many of the shortcomings that this game experienced early on. Having never ventured into the Variant creation domain before I was surprised to find just how little support and guidance is available to support someone who thinks they may have a good variant to bring to the community. I can tell you this, for what it may be worth, were I to venture into this arena again I would make darn sure that the rules were better established, and more definitive.

Prior to beginning I had thought that the time I spent in the DVWorkshop had addressed all the potential aspects that could crop up. Boy was I wrong. I would again like to thank those of you who stuck with it through the creative development in that first year. It is too bad that couldn't have taken place prior to playing, as I had hoped for, and even asked about.

As for Stephen's dislike of my house rules, he is by no means alone. I would emphasize however that I take no offense at anyone who thinks my rules are draconian. I wrote them the way I did because that is the way I would want a game I was playing in run. We are all individuals (fortunately) and while I respect that, I also reserve the right, via my house rules, to hopefully create an environment for those of a kindred mindset.

I find it somewhat ironic though that in the half dozen or so games I have run since I began GMing about 18 months ago, that only ONE player has thought to ask, if an "All units hold" order is satisfactory for prelims. It is. Now some may say that accepting such an order and then having the player not submit any more is the same as an NMR. It isn't. A player who is at least willing to take the effort to send that order is demonstrating that he/she is still interested in the game, and as such more than likely going to follow up with another set of more complete orders. I am simply trying to separate those dedicated players from those who are sometimes less so.

England’s EOG

Most EOGs talk about general game play and how things ended up and why. Along with the frustrations with various peoples actions and in this case the actual game dynamics. However the same thing usually gets said several times from different points of view and becomes repeative. Instead I studied the game history and tried to find some best and worst moves for everyone. Unfortunately the 'best' moves proved elusive, while the worst glared like small suns. So I picked the overall BEST move and did a worst for each country and commented. Now I must warn you the comments verge on caustic to insulting so read at your own risk.

BEST move:

Big surprise, this goes to Turkey.

Activation of Greece as a Home center

The subtle way this move influenced the course of the game could easily be missed. Basically he made himself a mid game central power after coming from the advantage of opening corner position. I would argue that if this had been a regular game turkey wouldn't have been able to take so full advantage of France's miss orders.

The WORST:

Lets start with me

ENGLAND

I had two, count them, rule misunderstanding misorders under my belt by 03, got no where for some 3 years of play and didn't use a newly created SC to build till the bitter end. Dispite all that this is my worst move.

Spring 02 F Lon -> Eng

When units were needed in the north to break a stalemate what do I do? Send them to the English channel of course!! The brilliance is breath taking.

TURKEY

Unfortunately there is not much here to berate. Not enough rope was handed to our Turkish player to hang himself like so many others. Though this is in hind sight, I think this was his worst move.

Spring 01 F Ankara hold

So you had a deal with Russia. So whaaaaat?! You weren't doing anything else with the fleet.

FRANCE

Doh! This is the only thing that can be said about France's worst.

Fall 03 F WMS s F WMS - TYS (*Illegal Order*)

Fall 04 F Tyrrhenian Sea Supports F Tunis - Rome (*Void*)

Not just one... but TWO critical moves lost to "didn't edit" syndrome!

GERMANY

The fall of Germany was fast and furious. It was accomplished by 4 other powers in semiconcert. There was little to be done for the hapless German. So his worst move must come from an earlier period.

Fall 01 F Denmark Hold

Russia has opened with hostilities on two fronts. Your line of attack is wide open. Best move? Let him build some more defense. Bloody Excellent Mate!

AUSTRIA

I had a tough choice on this one. I settled on an opening move that just boggled my mind.

Fall 01 A Vienna -> Budapest

I mean, why do this! At least make an attempt for Greece while blocking Trieste with the two armies. Turkey, of course, took Greece and thus began Austria's nose dive of doom.

ITALY

Though the majority of Italy's down fall can be attributed to the stalemate with Austria, the following I think warrantes as the dumbest move.

France Spring 02 F Por -> Spain SC

Italy's reaction...

Fall 02 F Apulia Supports A Venice

Fall 02 F Ionian Sea - Adriatic Sea (*Fails*)

ike... where else was Spain going to go? Apparently the might of the Italian forces was to have crushed the Austrians, thus ensuring Italy's tactical advantage in the West Med against France.

RUSSIA

Right off the bat the Russian set up to ineptly get nowhere.

Spring 01 A Mos -> Stp F Sev -> Bla

Bring yourself in to conflict with both corner powers. Fantastic! Develop stalemates with both corner powers. Excellent! Let Germany walk right into not only Warsaw but Moscow too. Astounding!!... Having two fronts is bad, okay!

Russia’s EOG

I will use Andrew's EOG statements [***] to explain how things went from my point of view.

[Instead I studied the game history and tried to find some best and worst moves for everyone. Unfortunately the 'best' moves proved elusive, while the worst glared like small suns. So I picked the overall BEST move and did a worst for each country and commented.]

The Game is called Diplomacy for a reason, the tactical game is supposed to implement the Diplomatic agreements. Russia had strong diplomatic agreements with both Germany and Austria in 1901. With Germany a non aggression pact and support into Swe. With Austria the conquest by Austria of the Balkans to deny Turkey Gre. In Sp1901 everything went as planned, by 1902 both had dishonored their agreements with Russia. Still had the first Turkish player not outguessed me tactically the situation could have been salvaged.

[BEST move: Big surprise, this goes to Turkey. Activation of Greece as a Home center ]

No! Out Guessing Russia's F Bla S A Arm-Ank in 1902 saved his situation and forced Russia to disband F Bla.

[The WORST:

ENGLAND I had two, count them, rule misunderstanding misorders under my belt by 03, got no where for some 3 years of play and didn't use a newly created SC to build till the bitter end. Despite all that this is my worst move.

Spring 02 F Lon -> Eng

I would agree as diplomatically you decided to take Scandinavia 'at all costs' without successfully convincing Russia not to defend 'at all costs'. Which is why you 'got no where for three years'. Further you did not convince Germany to attack France but allowed him to attack Russia letting Turkey completely off the hook!

[TURKEY: Unfortunately there is not much here to berate. Not enough rope was handed to our Turkish player to hang himself like so many others. Though this is in hind sight, I think this was his worst move.

'Spring 01 F Ankara hold'

So you had a deal with Russia. So whaaaaat?! You weren't doing anything else with the fleet.]

Actually this was his worst diplomatic mistake as I proposed a neutral Black Sea and he accepted. This gave me a shot with AH help, at taking out Turkey in 1902. I went for it but AH never came through with his end. When Bill took over the position I offered to be his Cat's Paw in order to gain some revenge on the other players in this game. In this I was successful, but disapointed when Turkey did not let me keep StP as requested.

[FRANCE Doh! This is the only thing that can be said about France's worst.

[Fall 03 F WMS s F WMS - TYS (*Illegal Order*)

Fall 04 F Tyrrhenian Sea Supports F Tunis - Rome (*Void*)

Not just one... but TWO critical moves lost to "didn't edit" syndrome! ]

France never played the triangle game moving with G support against E or E support agaist G this was his greatest mistake. The above was a failed gamble which gave England lots of breathing room which he failed to fully exploit.

[GERMANY The fall of Germany was fast and furious.

Completely dissagree this was his only good move not following this up with an attack upon England with Russian support was his undoing. So long as Russia honored his agreement to not build A War and F StP(sc) he was safe as houses and could have held on to Hol,Bel and attacked the North Sea. He decided to take a de-activated no threat War instead! This put him between E/F with no ally to bail him out. When Russia sold out to Turkey he lost War/Mos and was crushed by F/E.

[AUSTRIA I had a tough choice on this one. I settled on an opening move that just boggled my mind.

Fall 01 A Vienna -> Budapest

Completely Agree! What you don't know was his Sp1901 moves were suggested by myself. He agreed to take out Turkey with my support. His comments to me were I 'm with you and will take Gre or something like that. So imagine my shock and dismay when he did otherwise. A 1902 five unit AH is very hard to beat I would like to know why he dishonored our agreement. His E-Mail of 'I told you I was a lone Wolf' was somehow not informative!

[ITALY Though the majority of Italy's down fall can be attributed to the stalemate with Austria, the following I think warrantes as the dumbest move/s.

France Spring 02 F Por -> Spain SC

Italy's reaction...

Fall 02 F Apulia Supports A Venice

Fall 02 F Ionian Sea - Adriatic Sea (*Fails*)

Like... where else was Spain going to go? Apparently the might of the Italian forces was to have crushed the Austrians, thus ensuring Italy's tactical advantage in the West Med against France. ]

Italy is always a difficult position to play unless a successful alliance with Russia defeats AH/T. I never allied with Italy in an effective way.

[RUSSIA Right off the bat the Russian set up to ineptly get nowhere.

Spring 01 A Mos -> Stp F Sev -> Bla

Bring yourself in to conflict with both corner powers. Fantastic! Develop stalemates with both corner powers. Excellant! Let Germany walk right into not only Warsaw but Moscow too. Astounding!!...Having two fronts is bad okay.]

Strongly Diaagree! Russia has three fronts no matter what he does. Diplomatically I tried to disarm the North and German fronts but Englands obvious attempt to land a Alpha Army in Norway left no choice but a two front war! Had Germany not turned it into a three front war or had AH kept his word I may have done better. My diplomatic skills were not up to the job that is were I blew it.

GM'ing! Though I had a the feeling I was not Libby's favorite player I liked her fast ajudication game pace. Her variant idea caused me to put together my own variant from ideas I have long harboured. Unless I find 4 more players the game will not see play testing. This was a very tough game many thanks to those who stayed with it from beginning to end.

Turkey’s EOG

I walked into a good position with one build due according to the GM. I had a lot of good moves, but apparently so did my predessor. All the good moves specifically noted so far were his.

Accepting the offer from Russia went a long way to winning this game and helped in getting across the stalemate line. He was very effective at diverting Englands resources. Sorry about STP, but it was the last season and I wanted to ensure the win.

I especially enjoyed the gang up on Turkey messages that Stephen kept sending Hugh.

Using Greece as a home center was key to keeping France out of Italy. That and his misorders. My orginal intent in Italy was the keep the french out and then the Italians abandoned it and went north. After that It was find a way to get Ber, Mun, Mar, or Spa. Didn't think I would end up with more than one of them, but it looks like things broke down in the defense the last year.

First solo. I'll take it. Looking forward to the next one.

As for Libby's house rules I had a run-in in previous game, but managed to work it out.
