| Uniform Description for Texas Confederate Troops, Western Theater: Hat: Civilian hat with brim preferred, preferably with ribbon bound edge, according to style of the time [EoG* pp. 168-9]. Plantation style hats were popular with Texas troops. A gray kepi is optional for a minority of members [EoG* pp. 162-3]. B. Jacket: Columbus Depot jacket, i.e., a shell jacket of cotton-wool jean cloth, gray of any shade, trimmed with color of service (surviving specimens have blue trim) [EoG* pp. 143, bottom]. Any other documented western depot jacket is acceptable [EoG* pp. 140-3]. Cloth need not be same shade as trousers (in group photos, half were darker and half were lighter). C. Trousers: Made of any shade of gray jean cloth, straight leg design with button fly and buttons for suspenders. Also acceptable are civilian trousers of the time [EoG* pp. 152-3]. D. Shirt: Civilian pattern of the time [EoG* pp. 154-5]. E. Shoes/boots: "brogans" are preferred [EoG* pp. 174-5]. Shoes or boots are to be made of black or brown leather. F. Cap pouch, cartridge box and strap: Black or brown leather cartridge box and cap pouch, with straps of leather or black cloth. Cartridge boxes may be worn on waist belt. [EoG* pp. 185, 192-9]. G. Belt/buckle: Texas Star buckle preferred. Square "Georgia frame" or "Y tongue" buckle, or square CSA (or CS) buckle also acceptable. [EoG* pp. 190-1, 184]. H. Rifle (musket): Any N-SSA (or CWSA, depending on the sponsoring organization) approved arm is acceptable. I. Other equipment allowed but optional: haversack, white [EoG* pp.201] or captured Union black linseed finish.
