Gender & Development Camp
The Segou region Peace Corps volunteers held a 'gender and development camp' for 18 Malian youth  August 10-12, 2006. Ages ranged from 10-19. Topics in health, nutrition, sexuality, and womens' rights were covered.  We brought the youth out to a nice restaurant, and to an outdoor theater on the disease Aids.

I contributed the first night by doing some clowning. I made balloon hats. You can see some pictures
HERE. It helped to break the ice and make everyone more comfortable being at the camp for the first night.

Two days later, on Saturday, I gave a short talk to the group regarding women's rights. There were about an equal number of boys and girls present. Specifically, I said that it is not a given that wives need to be beaten after they get married. All too often, girls grow up here with the assumption that they will be beaten after marriage.

We volunteers hope that we made a small impression at least. It was work, and fun.
