On 3-4 March 2006, I watched the annual Mask & Marrionnette Festivel in Markala, my home town. Every year for the past several years, dance troups from a variety of places in West Africa gather in Markala to dance and play music. It was the most authentic historical dancing that I have seen so far. Dancers in some very elaborate masks and costumes performed to singing, drumming, and chanting while telling stories of ancient life in Africa. There were birds, elephants, hippos, as well as fish costumes! (By the way, more people are killed by hippos than any other wild animal here in West Africa.) Click here to see pictures of the dancing. |
