| My Friend Tim | ||||
| Tim is my friend in Mali. Not that he is my only friend. I have several Malian friends, and a couple of other Peace Corps friends. Most PC volunteers do not live close to each other. Our objective here is not form an all white community, but to integrate into the host communities and do work.
However, as luck would have it, Tim and I live relatively close together in Bamako. We both moved here from opposite ends of Mali. We have different work as well. But once or twice a week, after work and on weekends, we get together for a meal, walks, and good conversation. We discuss our work, our impressions of Mali, and various personal issues. One of our favorite past times was splitting a pizza, then walking to the French Cultural Center to see a movie. I appreciate having his friendship. The picture is Tim with one of his 3 English classes. When Tim got to Mali, he discovered that he LOVES teaching English. And his students love him. He makes learning fun and relevant for them. He even incorporates lessons in other subjects into the classes. For example, when he teaches English to managers at the Ministry that he works in, he uses subject matter related to their work. This may include subjects like the Internet, email, and marketing. I will miss Tim after I leave Mali. We plan to stay in touch for a long time. |
