Bike Ride - 24 Feb 2007 | ||||
It was nice to get out on a bike ride this morning. There is a bike club in Bamako made up of expats (foreign workers living in the area). We met at 7:15 am. They loaded my bike in their truck, and the 4 of us drove about 30 minutes outside of Bamako. See the pictures to see what the area looks like. We spent about 2 hours following cow paths and 1 lane donkey cart paths. We met a few local families living in the area. I saw an area clearcut of trees for firewood. In the midst of the natural untouched beauty, I found an area where garbage was dumped by a truck. Plastic and papers were blowing around the area, mixing with the cattle and the houses. It turns out that farmers pay the city to dump garbage on their land in order to get the nutrient benefit of the residual organic matter. Papers & plastic come along for free. Goats routinely die because they eat the plastic and cannot digest it. We saw women carrying large loads on the heads as well as babies on their backs. This is normal wherever I go. 3 hours later, I am here on the Internet sending these pictures to you. What a contrast in living. |
