Only 2% of the population is Christian, so Noél is not a big holiday here. The other 98% are Muslim, with a few anamists (native African spriruality). There is no advertising for gifts, no gifts that I saw, and no xmas trees. On the Eve of Noél, I attended a midnight Catholic mass with about 100 other people. Great music to drums and everyone sang in full voice. On the day of Noél, I attended the Presbyterien service. See pictures here. Again, great drumming and singing. Both sermons were in Bammankan (Bambara), so I could only guess what they were saying. The church communities were warm and inviting. It felt good. |
