Mud Art | ||||
I experienced 'mud art' recently in the Village of Ségou. It is an old form of African art that uses mud to draw on specially prepared cloth. When I arrived at the demonstration/class, I was given a piece of material to work on (can you tell which is my art work in the pictures ?) After I painted figures on the cloth with the mud using a simple brush, the material was dipped in a solution to 'fix' the drawing, or make it permanent. I then had the option to add a white color to the art. The white color came from another plant. I had to wait for my first/black markings to dry before I added the white. After my white highlights, the material was again 'fixed' in another solution of plant extract. The instruction were all in French, so I missed the names of the plants. |
