No Money....No Problem
Whenever I take a taxi or public transit, I never need to count the change. I am almost sure to get the corect change. This is Even true in a 'basche', a rickety minivan crammed with 12 people. Sometime during the trip, the attendant will reach out his hand to each person sequentially, indicating that he wants payment. Each person puts money into his hand. The attendant stops after each offering, verifying the amount.  If the amount is precisely correct, the attendant's hand continues on to the next person. If the amount is over, and the attendant has the change already in his hand, the hand will make the change. If the amount is over, and the attendant does NOT have the change in hand, he will continue to the next person until he reaches the last person. Sometime before the end of the trip, each person will receive the required change. No questions asked, no need to be concerned.

One day, about dinner time, I was very hungry. However I did not have any small denomination currency to offer the restaurant. It is not possible to make change for many bills in most small businesses. They do not have the change. For example, by dinner might cost $1. I could give him $2 and expect change. But I could not get change for $5 or $10. They do not have that much money on premises.

So I approached the restaurant server with my predicament, saying that I had 'no money' for him then, but that I could go to a bigger store after my meal, and get change to pay. He said 'no problem'. I had my $1 dinner, said thank you, went to the bigger store to get change, and returned to pay him about 1 hour later.

On another occasion, at the larger store that I mentioned above, I made a big purchase of household supplies - food and soaps, etc. I got to the cash register, and the total cost of the goods was more than I had on me. I began taking items out of the bag and giving them back. They said "No, no - take the items and pay us tomorrow".  No note, they do not know my name, I do not know their names.

The next day, I walked in the store to pay them back. A different employee was behind the register. He could not find any note confirming what I was talking about, but he took the money I my word that I owed it.

I find all of these situations refreshing. Trust feels good.
