My Life - Reverse Chronology

2001-June-Gallbladder-the final chapter-So this is number ERCP number 6.  And the stints are out at last.  The annoying pressure in the gut is finally gone.  Feeling nothing there feels so good.  And the ERCP guy is thinking that I should have long term success.  It's been two years now - hopefully I can put this era behind me.  I'm sure that even my fans are tired of hearing about it.

2001-Gallbladder update - After 5 ERCP's still have stints in the bile duct.  I hope for the best.  Otherwise doing pretty well.  Dave is doing well - he has been promoted to Captain as a security guard at Smith Haven Mall.  Mike is busy every day.  Mostly he is painting houses.  Dawn is a busy Girl with Girl Scouts, baton twirling, tap, ballet, jazz, and of course her Clarinet.  Gail is taking a computer course.  Gail continues to be active in the PTA.  Nephew Nick is staying with us as he is student teaching.

1999- Gallbladder continued - The never-ending saga. So seven weeks after surgery, the surgeon descovers a fungus infection where the T-tube came out of my abdomen. He got no argument from me when he said it was time to pull it out, and that didn't hurt tooooo bad. The following few days were days of degeneration and suffering with my urine turning darker each day, BAD abdominal cramps, an all body itching and skin and eyes turning yellowish. Yup the blood tests proved liver enzyme counts toooo high and my surgeon arranged for an emergency ERCP for the next morning, he found a competent gastroenterologist in Manhatten at Lennox Hill Hospital. Well the procedure went well and I came home with a stint in my bile duct which kept open an secton that had collaplsed when the T-Tube was pulled. After 8 days in the hospital suffering with Pancreatitus (very very painful) on Demerol and Toridol in the butt ever 6 hours X-rays, CTscan, NPO, IV food, etc. I came home and returned to work a few days later.

Yup four weeks after having the ERCP, I had some more problems. More blood tests, sonogram. CTscan, IV antibiotics and I was back to Lennox Hill for another emergency ERCP (9/23). This was followed by 2 - 3 days of mild pancreatitus and back to work. Fine for another five weeks and yup I was back for another ERCP on Nov 1. Almost no side effects from that procedure and after one days rest - back to work. Right now - (12/6), I'm doing great but I have 2 double pigtail stints in my bile duct. I expect they will removed by the end of the year - and hopefully that will end the saga.

1999 - My Gallbladder. So apparently that excruciating pain that I've felt in my back for over 20 years - sometimes tearing and sometimes stabbing - was only my Gallbladder with the Common Bile Duct adhered to it via some scar tissue. Apparently the rather odd anatomy that I had with the Cystic Duct being virtually non existant and the Common Bile Duct stretched to it's limit to get over to the Gallbladder and back has not only caused me severe pain on many occasions, but resulted in a complication during the Laproscopic removal of the Gall Bladder where the operation had to be converted to an Open Gallbladder removal. Thus that Gall Bladder had the last word. following one week of hell starting June 21, and three weeks of steady improvement, I returned to work today feeling pretty good. Of course at this writing July 19, I still have a T-Tube in my Common Bile Duct and pertruding from my abdomen. So cool.

1998 - Mike makes Hauppauge High School Varsity Soccer and Breaks Collar Bone by falling off bicycle. Davey returns to Oswego for Sophmore year. "Work hard Davey, make us proud." Release of 0.35micron cell library in early November.

December 14, 1947 - I was born in Brooklyn,NY into the Burstein family. At the time my sister Maggie was 14 months older than me. Now she says that I am her older brother. To further complicate things I am suffering from "Birthday Realization Trauma" brought on by #1 below. It seems that I didn't find out my real birthday until I registered for the draft at age 17. I had always celebrated my birthday on December 1, but now even my family refuses to acknowledge my adopted birthday.

Things my sister remembers:
  1. My parents doctored my birth certificate to get me into school a year early and convinced me that my birthday was December 1st so that I wouldn't spill the beans.
  2. I didn't walk until I was 5.
  3. My mother, carried me to school until I was 8.
  4. I didn't learn to dress myself until I was 10.
  5. I learned to tie my shoes at 12.
  6. Never learned to talk.
