Guitarist's Long Road Back
Steve Orchard
5 years after a serious car accident nearly claimed his life, former Iron Mountain resident Garland Triest is making strides among the Los Angeles music scene. Triest, a former member of the famed local act BLACK DIAMOND was also known as a Top notch guitar instructor with many students to his credit. A few years ago Triest decided to follow his dream and make the move to California, and the dividends are beginning to pay off. I caught up with Triest this past week, and he talked about the new CD he's working on. "Its called 'Rock Mirror' with some very talented musicians: Jenny Warren, vocalist for L.A.'s 'The Iron Maidens', the worlds only all-female tribute to Iron Maiden; Steven Mezo, an incredible drummer here in Los Angeles, and some old friends of mine who will be making an appearance. Joe Budek from Black Diamond will be flying out to do the bass parts, and Karen Vassar will be contributing  keyboards, cello, flute and guitar tracks as well as co-producing the CD. Karen has edited sound FX for several films including "Highlander 4:Endgame", "Avenging Angelo", "Southlander", and recently the Independant film "P.E.". I want to start playing Los Angeles clubs sometime this year once the CD is finished and possibly do a concert back home at some point".
Triest, originally from Powers, started recording when he was about 16.
Following the car accident, it took nearly 2 years to return to music. He says, "The second chance was not one I was going to waste. My girlfriend Karen and I decided to move to Hollywood 2 years ago and I really love it  here, we are having a blast! I get homesick sometimes, but this is a very exciting place to be, surrounded by so many successful people in the entertainment Industry and so much opprtunity to be creative." Triest is also prolific with computers and creating websites. His company, Prestige Design, specializes in promoting bands and entertainers through the internet on a global scale. "My own site, GT  online(www.oocities.org/garlandtriestonline) has everything from a bio, updates, chat room and photo galleries to a download area where you can hear MP3's and an online store where you can find my CD's, and all kinds of fun stuff like my interactive role playing adventure Dreamquest2000. My next project is a 3-D virtual reality site where users can interact as animated characters in real time. I am actually on my site pretty often, which allows me to get one on one with people all around the world, so drop by and say hi!" Triest also added that the California lifestyle has been very good for him. "These days its a vegetarian diet, and lots of water, exercise and fresh air. Hiking in the Mountains or going to the beach and I feel great! I am a living example that you can overcome anything if you work hard, believe in yourself and follow your heart!"
Odds & ends...This past week VH-1 has been running a Nightly one hour special on The Top 100 "One hit wonders" of all time. While the choice of William Shatner as the host is a bit puzzling, the show itself offers a fascinating look back at performers who,for the most part, had their one shining moment. Some of the choices for "One hit wonders" are a bit off-base though; while MEN WITHOUT HATS were known primarily for "The Safety Dance"(#3,1983), they did score another Top 20 Pop hit a few years later in "Pop goes the World". The inclusion of THE WAITRESSES with "I know what boys like" is also surprising, considering the song wasn't even a Top 40 hit. While I had caught only Mondays show at the time of putting this weeks column together, its certainly been a fun look back, and one that continues tonight and tomorrow at 9PM Central time. Its  guaranteed to spark debate among sharp-eyed chart buffs...Next weeks new releases include the first disk in about 5 years for Canadian rock band RUSH with "The Vapor Trail". Van Morrison returns with "Down the Road", Moby's latest is "18" and Weezer returns with "Maladroit"...
