Woodstock House just outside of Inistiogue, was burned to the ground by the IRA during the "troubles" of 1922. It was once the manor house of William Frederick Tighe, a member of the Irish landed gentry and noted writer. His niece Mary Tighe, the poet, died here in the nineteenth century and as was the custom among the very wealthy, a death mask was planned to be made as a remembrance of the young lady. Unfortunately the plaster tradesman had a three days journey before he arrived, and the Tighe's left poor Mary laying on the divan while rigamortis set in. The house is said to be haunted. |
