Builder's Photos of Locomotives

Here are some photographs of locomotives, arranged by builder. These photographs were taken of the locomotive by the builder, upon completion of the locomotive. There are photographs from all three of the major steam locomotive builders, along with three photos of locomotives built by the Norfolk and Western in their own shops. One of the N&W locomotives pictured is the "Jawn Henry", the coal-fired, steam turbine, electric drive locomotive built in the 1950's. If you like these photographs there are several books which use builder's photos. Steam's Finest Hour by David P. Morgan illustrates the epitome of steam. Also, the Steam Locomotive in America, by Alfred W. Bruce has over 150 of this type of photograph.

I have also included paintings of a few EMD first generation diesels. These are very colorful, compared to the black and white steam photographs. An article in Railfan and Railroad Magazine a few years ago argued that these painting done by EMD were very influential in determining the paint schemes of a particular railroad. While all of the paintings shown here are the final paint schemes used by the respective railroad, similar artwork was used to portray how EMD's products would look with the customer's name on it. According to the article, more than one railroad adopted a paint scheme that was originally the inspiration of an EMD artist.
