The current theories about learning a language.

1. make the lessons interesting.

2. make the material PERSONAL

3. teach something else, not English, and the grammar and vocabulary will be practiced and strengthened.

4. do not translate

5. limit the talking by the teacher

6. Each half hour—the students need to produce something.

7. pronunciation is important – practice individual and group pronunciation

8. When a student makes a mistake during a quick exercise, the teacher will correct immediately.

9. if the student is trying to tell a story, the teacher will write the error on paper and at the end of the story the errors will be shown.

10.   Accuracy or Fluency… what is the aim of the practice?  Will you be accurate or will you be flowing?

11.  use photos and videos in the class.

12.  use materials in the class

13.  remember the differences between male brains and female brains.   Most men can do only one thing at a time.  Most females can do several things at once.   The hunter or the gathering/ protecting/ cooking mother?

14. I believe that if you know more about me, you can ask more questions. If you ask questions, then you are practicing English.

15. Every half hour, you need to produce sound or a drawing or a composition or a test or clicks on a computer screen.

16.   There are many intelligences and abilities.  Logical, musical, movement, visual, three-dimensional (architects), abstract, verbal, finger control, social skills (interpersonal), internal (intrapersonal)… and many more ways to learn …

17.  If you learn a word and USE a word, then the synapse in your brain will be stronger.  (Synapse = the connection between two neurons).

18. We need to review at least seven times.  How can we remember to review?  Let’s use a large easel.  Let’s use boards.  Let’s count how many minutes the teacher talks and then how many minutes the students are working in pairs and reporting to the group.

Here are some ways to practice English
Sing a song
Create a poem or a joke
Tell jokes from your language and translate them…  Draw a picture
Use blocks and golf balls
Teach the class something about your country or your city.
Teach the class or your partner
Change partners
Write questions to give to another class
Interview other classes.
Write a play
Work together on difficult problems.

Work together to survive a virtual problem (we are lost on a deserted island)

We fell off a ship and we need to grab five items from this list.  What will you bring?
What will you do with the items?

Read an article together and debate the issue.  Get very involved and passionate.
Write sentences in past and passive
(Did you see a shark?  Yes, I saw a shark.  The shark was seen by me.)

One student reads some sentences and the other students write (dictation)

One student makes a presentation and other students look for errors and ask questions.

Take photos and create a story.
Fill in worksheets.  Write stories and omit letters so other students can guess.
Take photos and put them in a special order.
